Diablo 2: Resurrected is the remaster of the beloved Diablo 2 that fans have been waiting a long time for. According to the information available, and the first alpha test that occurred for Diablo 2: Resurrected, the game is shaping up to be very faithful to the original to the delight of fans. This is alongside all of the quality of life additions the developer is including, such as an increased stash size, the sorely needed option to pick up gold by walking over it, and more. These improvements currently don't seem to take away from what Diablo 2 was, only enhancing what made it good by removing few frustrating gameplay quirks.

Diablo 4 doesn't have a release date as of yet, but will more likely see a 2022 or 2023 release. After the release of Diablo 2: Resurrected, the mobile iteration Diablo: Immortal will release afterward in 2021. Once Diablo 2 is brought back to the forefront of gaming alongside Diablo: Immortal coming out shortly after, Diablo will be at peak popularity once again, which the franchise hasn't seen in a long time. The success of both Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo: Immortal will be crucial to the success of Diablo 4.

Importance Of Diablo 2: Resurrected's Success

Diablo 2 Resurrected Classes

Diablo 2 was the turning point in action RPG gaming, and its success proves it. Not only was it a critical success, receiving multiple Game of the Year awards, but it is also regarded as one of the best games of all time. This is proven further with fans still playing the original, 21 years later. When Diablo 2: Resurrected releases later in 2021, it is sure to satisfy fans who have wanted an upgrade to the original, though its success is still to be determined. The quality of life additions to the remaster might satisfy many fans of the original, while appealing to an entirely new generation of gamers, which will be necessary to its renewed success.

Diablo 3 came out 12 years after the release of Diablo 2, to the disappointment of many fans of the series, due to the various bugs upon launch and gameplay departures from its predecessor. Since then, Diablo hasn't seen its height in popularity since Diablo 2 came out, and recreating that will be important for the success of Diablo 4. When Diablo 2: Resurrected is released, it will surely do well so long as the game itself is true to what most fans are looking for, while also avoiding the pitfalls of remasters such as Warcraft 3 Reforged. If Diablo 2: Resurrected can maintain a positive reception, it will be all the better for Diablo: Immortal and Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 Could Repeat Diablo 3's Mistakes

Before the release of Diablo 3, its development went through multiple changes to mechanics and functions. Currently, Diablo 4 is going through many gameplay mechanic changes and tweaks as it goes through various developmental phases. This could prove to be a good thing as they fine-tune what is needed to make a genuinely fun Diablo experience. Though fans who remember the betas for Diablo 3 will know that the game had gone through many iterations of itself before its release, leading to the lackluster entry's release.

If Diablo 4 is to be a success, it will need to be closer to the action RPG gameplay in Diablo 2 than the more arcade nature of Diablo 3. Hopefully, the release of Diablo 2: Resurrected will remind fans of the more hardcore time that Diablo came from, than the more forgiving nature of more recent games like Diablo 3. The re-release of Diablo 2 would bolster what fans remember of the Diablo series, creating the much-needed hype that would drive more sales for the sequel. This in turn with the mobile launch of Diablo: Immortal, would garner new fans and re-establish a strong fanbase once again.

Diablo 4 Needs To Ride The Momentum

Diablo 4 Lovecraftian

Diablo 2: Resurrected is sure to deliver on what fans wanted for a remaster of Diablo 2, but this could be a double-edged sword in some cases. Because of the major success Diablo 2 continues to see long after its release, its remaster could overshadow Diablo 4 as it has continued to overshadow Diablo 3. If Diablo 4 doesn't measure up to the fan's expectations, fans might continue to stick with Diablo 2 in the form of its remaster for many years to come, or until the next release of a Diablo title.

When Diablo 3 came out, Blizzard did not have much competition in the action RPG genre, but now that ARPG titans like Path of Exile, Wolcen, and Grim Dawn are out and thriving, Diablo 4 will have to be a hit on launch. If Diablo 4 cannot create something that will keep fans coming back, like its competitors, then it may share the same fate as Diablo 3 with its waning player base. There won't be much forgiveness from the fans this time around if Blizzard can not create a well-received release in the Diablo series.

With both Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo: Immortal releasing in the same year, Diablo fever will be at an all-time high. If Diablo 2: Resurrected somehow doesn't meet the fans' expectations, and Diablo: Immortal isn't a commercial success, then Diablo 4 could already be dead on arrival.

Diablo 2: Resurrected is planned to release in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
