When fans last saw the infamous Dexter Morgan, he chose to abandon his lover and child to spare them from the chaos and danger that results from his serial killer exploits. However, the latest trailer for Dexter: New Blood reveals that self-exiled Morgan hasn't exactly been lonely during the years since the Showtime series originally concluded.

The divisive series finale of Dexter saw the titular serial killer come to the realization that his crimes inevitably lead to dire consequences for those he loves, a truth he finally admitted to himself after his pursuit of another murderer led to the death of his adopted sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter). Taking advantage of the Hurricane making its way to his home city of Miami, Dexter buried his sister at sea and steered his boar into the coming tempest, with the shattered remains of the vessel being discovered afterward and authorities declaring Dexter had died in the storm.

Of course, the final scene of the finale revealed that Dexter had faked his own death and was now working for a lumber company in Oregon under a new identity. While the series finale of Dexter was not well-received by most fans, lead star Michael C. Hall and original showrunner Clyde Phillips (who departed the original show after the fourth season) are hoping to make up for the much-maligned conclusion with a new ending that won't retcon the eight season's ending. Titled Dexter: New Blood, the revival has received a new trailer that opens with the surprising revelation that Dexter has formed a romantic relationship with Julian Jones' police chief Angela Bishop in the small town of Iron Lake, New York, where he is now living under the name Jim Lindsay and appears to have a rapport with the locals. Unfortunately, Dexter's idyllic life seems to unravel when Bishop informs him of series of disappearances occurring around town, news that seemingly leads to Morgan's killer instincts attempting to crawl their way back into his life if they ever truly went away.

During his time as a serial killer in Miami, Dexter only hunted murderers or rapists who had escaped justice in some way or another and were likely to offend again. Still, as previously mentioned, his "dark passenger" (the name he gives the force that allegedly drives him to kill) only led to tragedy for those few people he was capable of truly loving. In a brief scene featured in the latest Dexter: New Blood trailer, the memory of Debra scolds her brother and asks if he's learned nothing from his past mistakes. Lessons from the past appear to be unavoidable for Morgan, as the new trailer for the revival series concludes with a reunion between Dexter and his now-grown son, Harrison.

The ending of the latest Dexter: New Blood trailer raises a few questions, particularly regarding how Harrison found his father. In the series finale of Dexter, Harrison was just a child who had made his way to Argentina with Yvonne Strahovski's Hannah McKay, another killer whom Dexter had fallen in love with and trusted to raise his son in his absence.

McKay's tears in her final scene suggest she believed reports on Dexter's death, so how and why Harrison was capable of tracking down his presumed dead dad will require some explaining. Of course, Hannah McKay was always a resourceful one, so perhaps Dexter slipped up during his time in exile in a way that allowed her to put the pieces together.

Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime on November 7, 2021.
