While many AAA publishers have dazzled players with cutting edge graphics, indie publisher Devolver Digital used its incisive wit to present its biggest upcoming releases today. Tied together by a satirical storyline that took aim at video game marketing, Devolver Direct 2020 announced five indie games coming to players across various consoles and platforms.

Devolver kicked off its presentation with a new trailer for Shadow Warrior 3. After the initial announcement teaser a few days ago, this reveal contained the title's first gameplay footage. According to the trailer, the game is due in 2021. Although it may be available on other platforms later, players can currently put Shadow Warrior 3 on their Steam wishlists.

After showing off the graceful, yet gory, first-person combat against outlandish bosses, the presentation turned itself over to PlayStation's Head of Indies Shuhei Yoshida, who revealed that the cartoonish and adorable Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout would come to the PlayStation 4 and Steam on August 4.

Veering back into gory horror, Devolver tapped Xbox head Phil Spencer to reveal the release date of Phobia Game Studios' long-anticipated Carrion, where players take control of a horrifying blob of flesh and tentacles to ruthlessly murder its victims. While the reverse-horror game is coming to the Nintendo Switch, PCs and the Xbox One, Spencer revealed that the game would be available for Xbox Game Pass on July 23.

Following a Nintendo indie reveal, fans in the Twitch chat excitedly hailed the arrival of a new trailer for Serious Sam 4. Devolver's new trailer gives players an exciting preview of the gameplay and the storyline. The shooter is a prequel backed by fast-paced guitar tracks that lets players tear through massive hordes of monsters. Croteam's latest game is coming to Google Stadia and Steam this August.

As a final surprise, Devolver Digital unveiled its own dystopian first-person marketing simulator for free. The indie publisher's zany combination of dark comedy and thrilling gameplay trailers made 2020's Direct a resounding success. Social media and live reactions raved about the many cameos and creative introductions to the new titles. The rave receptions that Devolver's presentation received proves that developers don't necessarily need the most funding to effectively promote their games.
