Devolver Digital announces new horror game Carrion at its E3 2019 press conference. Carrion is one of several big horror game announcements to take place at the event, as Dying Light 2 got a new trailer and release window, and Bethesda announced a new Shinji Mikami game called Ghostwire: Tokyo.

In development at Phobia Game Studio and being published by Devolver Digital, Carrion is described as a "reverse horror game." In Carrion, players don't play the role of the character being hunted, such as in the Outlast series or Five Nights at Freddy's, as they play the creature that other characters should be scared of. The player character is an "amorphous creature" who will "stalk and consume those that imprisoned [it] to spread fear and panic throughout the facility."

The gameplay trailer sort of pits Carrion as a backwards version of a game like Prey, where the player character faced shape shifting alien lifeforms. Devolver says that the creature in Carrion will be able to "grow and evolve" as it makes its way around the facility, learning new ways to take down the guards on the "path to retribution."

Some scenes in the trailer show that the creature has quadrupled in size, managing to reach more enemies easier. Another shows the creature jumping out of a television set, ripping an unsuspecting enemy to shreds. In the end scene, it's unclear whether the creature has shapeshifted into an enemy or if it has gotten into the enemy to make them explode. Whatever the explanation, it looks incredibly grim.

The Twitter version of the Carrion announcement trailer seems to be incredibly popular, with more than 3,000 people retweeting Devolver's tweet about the game. It also has more than 100 responses, with many saying that the game looks good and with a few comparing it to John Carpenter's The Thing. There are more than a few great horror games on people's wishlists, such as Hunt: Showdown and The Last of Us: Part Two, however, horror game fans seem more than ready to add another to that list.

It's unclear what platforms Carrion will be released on. It has been confirmed that the game will launch on PC and "console" but Devolver Digital hasn't said just which console that will be. The publisher has said that the game will be released in 2020, but no release window has been confirmed beyond that.

Carrion is in development for unspecified platforms and will release in 2020.
