The success of the animated Castlevania series on Netflix has led producer Adi Shankar to expand his vision. Shankar announced on Friday that, while the third season of Castlevania had been greenlit, he's also started work on a Devil May Cry TV series. And if that wasn't a wild enough announcement, Shankar also revealed that both Castlevania and Devil May Cry would together form the start of their own multiverse, dubbed the "Bootleg Multiverse."

Shankar's confirmations of the Devil May Cry TV show and the Bootleg Multiverse were both terse. All Shankar was willing to acknowledge was that he had personally purchased the rights to Devil May Cry, "so the jabronis in Hollywood don't f*** this one up too." It's unclear when this Devil May Cry show would arrive or if it'll be released via a streaming platform like Castlevania. And while initial reports say the project will be animated none of Shankar's comments officially confirm that.

Nevertheless, the announcement of a Devil May Cry show is certain to build hype within the gaming community. It seems like a great choice to fit Castlevania's mix of style, minimal plot, and excessive violence.

The announcement of a Devil May Cry TV series comes during a window where Capcom is trying to maximize hype for the franchise. The franchise has been in stasis for five years, barring the release of DLC, and modern gaming has cooled on the series since its most relevant years in the early 2000s. But Devil May Cry is coming back with Devil May Cry 5 in 2019. With that in mind, it's possible that this TV show may see a quick production.

As for the nature Adi Shankar's Bootleg Multiverse, the most important implication is that Castlevania and Devil May Cry are only the start. After all, just two franchises meeting is more of a crossover than a multiverse. That brings up the big rumor from the past weeks that Shankar is working on tying up the licensing for a Legend of Zelda animated show. While there's definitely the possibility that Shankar is just taking advantage of a misplaced rumor, perhaps there is a possibility of making a Zelda series and tying it into a greater video game multiverse. Who knows what this producer is capable of, after the crazy success of a rated-R Castlevania adaptation.

The Devil May Cry TV show has no currently announced release plans. Devil May Cry 5 releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 8, 2019.
