Hideaki Itsuno, known for directing multiple Devil May Cry games and Dragon's Dogma, has been working on a new project for quite some time. Itsuno initially promised that his new game would be announced in 2017, but the year has come and passed with no announcement. This may leave some fans worried that the project has hit a snag, but Itsuno has taken to Twitter to lay those worries to rest.

On Twitter, the Devil May Cry director offered an update on the development of his new game, saying that it's actually nearing the end of its development cycle. It's unclear why he was unable to announce the new game before 2017 is out, but if what he's saying is true, fans should be able to expect an announcement any day now.

"Happy new year! I am sorry that I can not present a new project last year. The development of the project is now under climax. I am making a great game so please expect it."

New Devil May Cry Game Announced, But It's Not What You Think - Nero

So, what is Itsuno's next game? The most prevalent theory is that Itsuno is working on Devil May Cry 5, a game that has been rumored for awhile now. Over the past few months, a number of story and gameplay details for Devil May Cry 5 have leaked, and the game was supposedly set for a PlayStation Experience reveal. Unfortunately, PlayStation Experience came and went with no Devil May Cry 5 announcement, but that doesn't mean fans should discount the rumors.

After all, Itsuno was apparently willing to show his new game at last summer's E3 event, but for reasons unknown, opted to keep it under wraps. And it's clear by the comments he made last year that he wanted to show his new game before 2017 was out, but for one reason or another, was unable to show it at PlayStation Experience in December as rumored.

Depending on just how far in development Itsuno's new game is, it's possible that we will see it before next year's E3. Whether it's Devil May Cry 5, a Dragon's Dogma sequel, or something completely different remains to be seen, but fans of Itsuno's work should look forward to an announcement later this year.

Devil May Cry 5 is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
