Fans have been getting excited over the new content Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will be bringing in a few short weeks. On top of finally making Vergil playable in DMC 5, it will introduce next-gen features like a Turbo Mode that speeds up the gameplay and a new difficulty option that increases the number of enemies on screen. The game will even come with ray-tracing support to give the game a next-gen sheen, but it turns out that this feature won’t be available on PC.

Like the name suggests, ray-tracing uses rays to dynamically calculate how light interacts with different objects in a 3D space. More and more, the technology is becoming a key aspect of pushing video game graphics into the future, and Capcom hasn’t been shy showing how it will enhance DMC 5’s visuals in the Special Edition. The publisher released a short video this week highlighting how ray-tracing will make light sources and reflections more dynamic than what’s possible on current-gen systems.

This is something that a lot of high-end PCs could handle with ease, but Capcom has made it clear that the Special Edition won’t be available for any platforms outside of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions will receive Vergil as DLC, but other than that, the rest of the new features like the gameplay changes, higher framerate, increased resolution, and, of course, ray-tracing will be exclusive to the consoles launching in November.

"Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition is specifically being developed and optimized to benefit the system architecture and leap in processing power offered by PS5 and Xbox Series X, so we're focusing on these platforms,” a Capcom spokesperson told Eurogamer. “At present, there are no plans to release DMC 5 SE on PC."

This news hasn’t been well-received among the PC part of the DMC 5 community, and, as one might expect, players have been letting their frustration known by review-bombing the game on Steam. Most of these largely hit the same notes, but the gist is that players feel betrayed by Capcom, and it has no real reason to leave the PC platform out in the cold like this.

Eurogamer has reached out for further comment. As of this writing, however, it has yet to receive a response from Capcom, so it remains to be seen if the publisher will reconsider its decision to limit the Special Edition to consoles any time soon, in light of the backlash it’s causing.

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will be released digitally as a PS5 and Xbox Series X launch title.
