Several weeks ago, a huge stash of gameplay and story details for the potential Devil May Cry 5 leaked on the Internet forum ResetEra, with the information leading many to believe that another official numbered entry is on the way for the series. Of course, that's not the only bit of scuttlebutt regarding the title, and other rumors about the sequel make it seem as if Capcom definitely has the game in the works, despite the company not having openly acknowledged Devil May Cry 5's existence.

Aside from the aforementioned gameplay and story details leaking online–which could have easily been fabricated by anyone–one of the more recent rumors included Devil May Cry 5 being announced at PlayStation Experience 2017 alongside Soul Calibur 6, which at least points toward the former being in the works. After all, the sixth installment in the iconic Bandai Namco fighting franchise went on to be revealed, showing that the Redditor "DasVergeben" who started the PSX rumor at least had some credible sources.

Of course, Devil May Cry 5 didn't actually go on to make an appearance at PSX 2017, but that could have been due to countless issues that caused Capcom to rethink its strategy of unveiling the game at the annual PlayStation event. For instance, the publisher and developer might have decided at the last minute to wait for E3 2018 instead in order to allow for a much bigger audience to see DMC 5 when it gets revealed. Or perhaps the potential title will be multi-platform, and Capcom reasoned that its debut at a Sony function would've rubbed other potential partners the wrong way.

Then again, the Redditor who got the tip that Devil May Cry 5 would be at PSX 2017 could have intentionally been given some bunk information to muddy the waters and make it that much more difficult to trace the correct details about Soul Calibur 6 back to the original leaker. Be that as it may, "DasVergeben" has been attached to several major leaks involving other games that ended up coming true, as the Redditor previously outed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming to Injustice 2.

All things considered, there's no way to concretely determine whether or not Devil May Cry 5 is in development at this point in time until Capcom officially pulls the curtain off of the project. Nevertheless, with so much evidence stacking up to make the case that the game is in the works, it's a safe bet to make that we will at least see Devil May Cry 5 in some capacity in the future.

Devil May Cry 5 is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
