While the world of Devil May Cry 5 is plunged into another demonic invasion with demons of various kinds, its roster of protagonist demon hunters also boasts vastly unique abilities. In the case of Dante, Son of Sparda, he brings his Devil May Cry experience in tow as he slowly secures new Devil Arms to add to his collection. As such, he boasts the largest arsenal of weapons and styles in Devil May Cry 5.

Being the last protagonist to be unlocked in the Devil May Cry entry, mastering Dante is possibly one of the hardest things to do for players. However, it’s not at all impossible once players understand his most crucial combos.

8 Guard Prop

Guard Prop

Combo String: Prop (Rebellion) + Guard Cancel

Transitions are one of the key aspects of Dante’s gameplay, and some of his combos are actually key transitional movements. One prime example would be Guard Prop, essentially encouraging players to learn how to Guard Cancel in order to quickly set up their moves.

The key here is to get into Swordmaster to Prop an opponent to rev them upwards. When players Guard Cancel, they immediately end the Prop animation and get an opportunity to Prop an opponent again to keep them upwards or move on to the rest of their combo.

7 Sky Star Rave

Sky Star Rave

Combo String: High Time (Rebellion) + Sky Star (Trickster Style) + Aerial Rave (Swordmaster Style)

Some Dante attacks do tend to send enemies to the front or the back, leaving the demon hunter with little to no room to catch up. This is where Sky Star (Trickster Style) comes in, as this summons a mid-air platform for Dante to propel himself forward. While this is a decent gap closer, Dante can actually use Sky Star alongside a basic combo rotation.

To do this, Dante should rush into the opponent with Rebellion (Melee) to thrust them upwards and then use the follow-up to teleport in mid-air. On the off-chance the enemy is too far, Dante can Sky Star to keep himself beside his opponent. He can then transition to an Aerial Rave (Swordmaster Style) to tear the enemy to shreds.

6 Prop Trick

Prop Trick

Combo String: High Time (Rebellion) + Prop (Swordmaster Style) + Air Trick (Trickster Style)

A classic when it comes to Dante combos in DMC 5, High Time + Air Trick is an essential combo starter, especially since giving Dante the consistent vertical advantage gives him more room to pull off moves.

Done with the Rebellion (Melee) and a switch between the Swordmaster and Trickster Styles, the key here is to use High Time to lunge at the opponent and send them high up in the air. Instead of following up with the option to immediately reappear in mid-air, Dante should Prop with the Swordmaster Style to catch the enemy and spin them again upwards. Afterward, Dante using Trickster Style should Air Trick to teleport in mid-air. From here, he can proceed with the finisher or continue comboing.

5 Taunt Air Hike

Taunt Air Hike

Combo String: High Time (Swordmaster Style) + Lucifer Taunt + Jump Cancel + Dash + Air Hike (Trickster Style)

There’s a chance that Dante might need more time in the air, and there’s actually a neat trick to do so through the help of his taunts. When airborne, Dante can use Lucifer to release a rose that hits the enemy for a small amount of damage. What’s important here is that this attack actually sends the enemy a little bit more up in the air.

Dante can use this to his advantage. He can essentially thrust an enemy upwards with High Time (Swordmaster Style) and then use the Lucifer Taunt to send himself and his enemy upwards. Afterward, Dante should Jump Cancel so he can use the Taunt again before using Dash (Trickster Style) upwards. Once he catches up with his opponent, he can continue his combos or use Air Hike for a quick series of attacks that sends enemies back down.

4 Sky Star Switch

Sky Star Switch

Combo String: High Time (Swordmaster Style) + Lucifer Taunt + Jump Cancel + Sky Star (Trickster Style) + Air Hike (Trickster Style)

A variation of the above move, this move becomes essential if Dante wants to avoid an enemy attack but still remain in a position where he can launch a counter. He can do this by combining the Lucifer Taunt with Sky Star, giving him far better control over the air.

As an example, Dante can thrust Rebellion (Melee) into his opponent and launch them in the air via High Time. Once he uses Lucifer Taunt, Dante should Jump Cancel and then Sky Star (Trickster Style) to the other side of the opponent. He can once again use the Taunt + Dash combo above to close the distance for another Air Hike or simply wait for the opponent to lose altitude to perform the same move.

3 Rainstorm Switch

Rainstorm Switch

Combo String: High Time (Swordmaster Style) + Rainstorm (Gunslinger Style) + Dash (Trickster Style)

A side-switching variation of the above move, Dante can use Ebony & Ivory (Ranged) to switch sides when in need to gain an advantage against his opponents. Maintaining the same example, Dante can still High Time (Swordmaster Style) opponents with his Rebellion (Melee) and then use the follow-up to teleport in mid-air.

However, instead of using Sky Star, he can switch to Ebony & Ivory to Rainstorm (Gunslinger Style) his way above the opponent and to the other side. After this, he can Dash (Trickster Style) to regain his altitude and perform more combos. It can help to switch weapons after the Rainstorm via Jump Cancel or pull off a finisher as soon as Dante gets to the other side.

2 Long Revolver Switch

Long Revolver Switch

Combo String: Stinger (Rebellion) + High Time (Sword Master Style)+ Long Revolver (King Cerberus)

Fans of DMC3 who loved the juggling capabilities of Cerberus will delight in the tri-weapon, tri-element nature of King Cerberus. It remains one of the best juggling weapons in the game, and it’s become a staple in a lot of players’ arsenals. Thankfully, the game does offer an easy way to transition into King Cerberus that remains a seamless combo.

To do this, players can stab the opponent with Stinger (Rebellion) and then High Time (Swordmaster Style) them into the air. Afterward, they should follow up with the mid-air combo and then Jump Cancel into King Cerberus, charging the Long Revolver combo to add a bit of electricity into the mix. They can continue this until they perform the finisher, or Jump Cancel again into another weapon for the finish.

1 Balrog Juggle

Balrog Juggle

Combo String: Stinger (Rebellion) + Heavy Jolt (Balrog) + High Time (Rebellion) + Feather (Balrog)

Dante wouldn’t have a true combo list if he didn’t have a martial arts kit, and it’s Balrog that provides DMC5 players with that satisfaction. Possessing a Blow (Punch) Mode and a Kick Mode, equipping Balrog gives players a separate punch and kick variant in their equipment shuffling options, encouraging them to switch between Balrog Modes alongside their regular weapons.

Thankfully, training this is quite easy for players. Ideally, they can Stinger (Rebellion) an opponent and then Heavy Jolt (Balrog Blow Mode) them, with the finisher sending them up in the air. Players can High Time (Swordmaster Style) them to send them further higher, and then follow up with a Dash before finishing with the Feather (Balrog Blow Mode) combo. However, players are actively encouraged to Jump Cancel and insert Balrog Kick Mode in between moves for just a few kicks, as there are enough split seconds for the weapon switch and to input one or two kicks before transitioning into another major attack.

Devil May Cry 5 is currently available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Amazon Luna, and PC.
