For the past year, Capcom has been rolling out the original Devil May Cry trilogy on the Nintendo Switch. While fans have disagreed on whether the price of these HD ports has been appropriate or not, the final and most beloved of the original PS2 games, Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is finally coming to Nintendo's smash hit console on February 20, 2020. The game's release coincides with the launch of the Capcom Store in Japan and all its strange Devil May Cry and Monster Hunter tie-in products.
Devil May Cry 3 is a prequel to the original Devil May Cry, which sees a younger, brasher, and less experienced Dante make his way up to the demon tower Temen-ni-gru to stop his brother Vergil from opening a portal to Hell itself. Devil May Cry 3 is also the first appearance of fan-favorite character Lady, as well as Dante's style switch system. The styles available are Trickster, focusing on dodging and agility; Swordmaster, which focuses on Dante's melee weapons; Gunslinger, which focuses on the ranged arsenal; and Royal Guard, which focuses on dodging and parrying. Two more styles can be unlocked later in the game including Quicksilver, which slows down enemy movement; and Doppelganger, which summons a shadow clone of Dante.
The most notable addition to the Special Edition version of the game is the inclusion of Dante's brother Vergil as a playable character. While having less weapons than his baby brother, Vergil more than makes up for it with raw power and combo potential. The special edition also includes Survival Mode, the first appearance of the Bloody Palace mode, as well as a new boss, Jester. Special Edition versions of Devil May Cry games are almost expected at this point, which is why earlier this year when Capcom said there would be no more DLC for Devil May Cry 5, fans became understandably upset.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is arguably one of the best action games ever made, and defined the character action sub-genre which would be further iterated and improved on by games like Bayonetta and even its own sequels with Devil May Cry 5. Being able to play this game on the go will definitely be appreciated by fans, which is the appeal to putting most older titles on the Switch. Some of the best classic games are on Nintendo Switch after all.
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition for the Switch will be available on February 20, 2020 for $19.99, and the first two games are also available for digital download for $19.99 each as well.
