So, it only goes without saying that a series with a passionate fanbase would obviously dissect almost everything there is to pick apart about the game. That being said, there are still some pretty notable things about Final Fantasy VI that most people have no clue about. Keeping this in mind, here are ten of the most well-hidden things about Final Fantasy VI that most people have no idea about.

10 Two Final Fantasy Legends Have Their Favorite Characters In This Game

Terra from Dissidia

Yoshitaka Amano, the legendary character designer behind some of the famous 2D games, has stated that Terra Branford is his favorite character in the entirety of Final Fantasy.

Another Final Fantasy veteran, Yoshinori Kitase, considers Celes Chere to be his favorite Final Fantasy character of all time as well.

9 The Vanish-Doom Glitch Is The Stuff Of Legends'

The fight against the Storm Dragon in Final Fantasy VI

Anyone who took an in-depth look into the original Final Fantasy VI release on the SNES would be well-aware of the Vanish-Doom glitch, which is considered by many to be one of the most legendary glitches in the entire series.

Basically, casting Vanish on any enemy in the game would lead to them being vulnerable to the instant death spell Doom, even if they were immune to instant death spells from the get-go. This turns a ton of challenging encounters in the game — including the bosses — into a complete cakewalk.

8 The Scene With Celes Getting Tortured Was Censored In The GBA Re-release

Celes's torture in Final Fantasy VI

The introduction of Celes in the game is not exactly the happiest one — accused of being a spy, Celes is beat up in a dingy cell by a bunch of Imperial Soldiers before being rescued by Locke.

The GBA release wanted to go for the lowest age rating possible, so this scene was changed with Celes not being bound in chains and the soldiers not even laying a hand on her.

7 There's A Cheeky Star Wars Reference In The Game

Locke Cole from Final Fantasy VI

Speaking of the prison break, there's a rather unique piece of dialogue that Celes will come up with if Locke rescues her in his Imperial Soldier disguise.

She'll say, "Aren't you a little short for an Imperial soldier?" which is a clear reference to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope when Leia says the same thing to Luke who's disguised as a Stormtrooper.

6 Celes Was Supposed To Be A Conflicted Spy

Celes Chere from Final Fantasy VI

Celes' original character was supposed to be that of a spy who questions her end goal after she hangs out with the party and becomes attached to them.

While this conflicted spy angle was scrapped for Celes, it didn't go to waste — this angle was incorporated in Cait Sith's character from Final Fantasy VII instead.

5 Sabin's Role In The World Of Ruin Could've Been Incredibly Tragic

Final Fantasy 6 Sabin and Phantom Train

In the World Of Ruin, failing to save the people from the burning building in Tzen will just lead to a game over. However, the original plan was for Sabin to get trapped in the collapsing building and die. Bringing Edgar here would cause him to dig through the rubble in a futile attempt to find his brother.

Due to obvious reasons, this angle was nixed altogether.

4 Terra Was Conceived As A 20-Year-Old Male Who Was Locke's Partner-In-Crime

Terra from Dissidia

Terra's character was supposed to be that of a 20-year-old male who served as a thief along with Locke. She was still supposed to be a half-esper, even after all these changes.

Thankfully, her character was shifted to her current variant, and parts of this original character design were used for Zidane and Tidus instead.

3 Terra Was Supposed To Die In The Game's Ending

However, it would be impossible to talk about Terra in this context without mentioning how the game would've treated her fate in the original draft.

Terra was supposed to pass away after the final confrontation against Kefka, but this was understandably scrapped due to how much of a downer the ending would've been.

2 Umaro Was Initially Supposed To Be Encountered In A Random Overworld Battle

Umaro from Final Fantasy VI

A dig through the game files shows a battle script for Umaro, who is one of the hidden recruitable characters in the World Of Ruin. It's believed that he was supposed to be encountered and recruited in a random battle on the overworld of the World of Balance itself.

However, Gau had already filled the role of a party member that could be recruited in the overworld through a random encounter, which is perhaps why the developers thought rehashing this idea again would've been somewhat lazy.

1 The Player Gets A 50% Discount On Items In Figaro If Edgar Is The Party Leader

Edgar Figaro from Final Fantasy VI

As the king of Figaro Castle, it goes without saying that Edgar should ideally get some special treatment from his subjects.

This is exactly what turns out to be the case — if the player decides to keep Edgar as the leader, then merchants will give their king a 50% discount on their products, which is quite a neat little touch indeed.
