The United States Space Force has announced that the uniformed members of the newest branch of the US military will be referred to as 'Guardians' moving forward. Some Destiny fans have since responded about how the name is the same as the player characters in Bungie's spacefaring shooter, making comparisons to the Light-infused protectors of humanity and this new arm of the military.

With the worldwide reach of the Destiny community, many fans from within and outside of the US have begun commenting on this new designation for members of the Space Force. Of course, none of the comical replies or ridicule is meant to be pointed at the military or its members directly, but simply pointing out the comical nature of the similarity between the two names.

A number of fans immediately started by simply posting pictures of Destiny's Guardians, making the comparison without much added comment to overexplain the joke. Others began giving their own takes on the new designation, noting exactly how strange they feel it is to see Bungie's game seemingly come to life through the Space Force. However, not every response has been specifically about Destiny, with others noting other spacefaring pieces of science-fiction that may have been the inspiration for these new Guardians.

Among the other "Guardians" viewers have been naming includes the Guardians of the Galaxy and even a callout from the official Halo Twitter account about the fifth game in Bungie's previous series, now run by 343 Industries. Of course, the allusions to the Guardians from Destiny is still the most accurate description that fans have centered on, due to way that the military focus fits in so well with the online game. Many onlookers are simply stuck on the comedy of seeing a name that is often used in fiction as a grandiose title to call the soldiers fighting against larger than life, dark entities being used by a government military force.

Some of the responses do get overtly political, although the the focus for many players is the connection to the over six years of impact Destiny's Guardians have had on gaming. The new designation itself is arguably comical, but it's definitely easier for everyone to enjoy when fans are simply pointing out the Guardian namesake and letting everyone enjoy the joke. Only time will tell if the US Space Force's Guardians end up alongside giant machines hovering over Mars.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
