For fans of Destiny, the long wait for The Taken King expansion is nearly over. The massive 2.0 update is out and available to download in preparation of the expansion, which is set to kick off the second year of the popular shooter/MMO in a big way.
Last year, Bungie and Activision got Destiny fans sufficiently hyped for the original game thanks to a variety of pre-release trailers and gameplay footage, and they’ve been doing a good job so far of building hype for the game’s second year of content. One of the more memorable trailers for Destiny, however, wasn’t really concerned with gameplay footage at all, but was a live action trailer that was equal parts cheesy and epic. This year, Destiny fans have another live action trailer to enjoy, this time promoting The Taken King expansion.
This latest live action Destiny trailer, which also blends humor and action in a very satisfying way, is directed by filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, known for his work on the films Oblivion and TRON: Legacy. It depicts a Guardian that gets a little ahead of his fireteam, and winds up triggering the boss fight with Oryx, the central antagonist of The Taken King expansion. Luckily his fellow Guardians show up just in time, so they can battle Oryx to the tune of “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin.
Also featured in the trailer is the iconic robot companion Ghost. As is to be expected, the Ghost featured in this trailer is voiced by Nolan North instead of Peter Dinklage, so it seems as though the plan to switch voice actors has been in the works for quite some time.
This trailer, named “Evil’s Most Wanted”, may be the first time many lapsed Destiny players have had a chance to hear Nolan North in the role of Ghost. This is because the trailer will be reaching quite a large audience, considering it will debut tonight on network television during the NFL season opener between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers on NBC.
While most gamers would rather see actual gameplay footage, live action trailers are a clever way for game companies to get non-gamers to pay attention to the product. While we’re sure The Taken King will have absolutely no trouble selling, considering the original Destiny release amassed $500 million in pre-orders and day one sales alone, a commercial spot like this will definitely help boost its numbers nevertheless.
