Any Destiny players that are fans of lore should be familiar with MyNameIsByf, a content creator whose focus is on telling the key stories of Bungie’s shared world shooter. Over the years, Byf has created some epic Destiny videos about a number of different topics, but this weekend he released his magnum opus: The Complete Story of Destiny.

Obviously, there is still more Destiny story to be written with the Shadowkeep expansion releasing next week, but even so there is a lot to cover already. In fact, Byf surpasses any of his past efforts by deliver a video that is nearly 4 hours in length.

Over the course of the lengthy video, Byf hits on topics that come before the events of Destiny 1 like the Books of Sorrow, inform the events of Destiny 1 like the Golden Age, and eventually the key moments of Destiny 2 like Forsaken. For any players who have felt like the game is lacking in story, Byf shows that Bungie has crafted an expansive universe that has a lot to offer. Unfortunately, getting to the meat of that story requires a lot more effort that most Destiny 2 players are willing to invest.

It truly is an exhaustive work and Byf had a number of collaborators for footage, art, and more, but rather than try and sum up everything in the video, it’s best just to set some time aside and watch:

If there is one element of Destiny that typically gets the most criticism it is the story. In Destiny 1, Bungie struggled to deliver a narrative that felt coherent and meshed with an experience that saw players jumping from planet to planet. Some story threads, like the Exo Stranger, were never followed up on, while others felt half baked.

At the same time, there are those Destiny fans who read the Grimoire cards and are well versed in the lore of the game. To them, Destiny has a complex narrative that encompasses thousands of years of world-building – they just had to go outside of the game to learn about it.

Luckily, there are content creators like MyNameIsByf who can bridge the gap between Destiny’s story and its players by bringing it to them in digestible videos. Or in the case of this latest undertaking, in a 4-hour long epic.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep releases October 1, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
