Sparrow racing makes its debut in Destiny next week with a limited time event called the Sparrow Racing League, which offers new maps, game modes, gear, and Sparrows.
Today at PlayStation Experience, a new limited-time event was announced for Destiny: The Taken King, the Sparrow Racing League. Destiny fans have asked for Sparrow racing since its launch last year, and have even put together community events themselves to race and do tricks with their Sparrows. It’s floated around as an idea for a long time, but now Bungie is finally adding it to the game. Here’s the trailer shown at the keynote:
Sparrow Racing League is a three-week, limited event that will begin December 8 and run through December 29. Besides bragging rights, rewards include new gear and sparrows that can only be earned from competing in this special event. It appears that Tess Everis, the microtransaction vendor in the Tower, will be offering up items that coincide with the event, which are likely shaders and emotes.
The new mode will also bring more maps on Destiny‘s Mars and Venus locations, specifically designed for racing Sparrows. Anyone who owns The Taken King expansion will be able to play the Sparrow Racing League for free.
Bungie will release a new ViDoc later today, but here are all the details from the developer:
The Sparrow Racing League will welcome competitors to participate in a six-player free-for-all death race through enemy territory. After the update goes live on December 8th, visit Amanda Holliday in the Tower. She’ll be your Quartermaster for the event. Grab and quest and some bounties. Then, take your mark on the starting line. You might also check in with Tess. Eververse Trading will have some flair to make the event a little more fun, and a little more stylish.
This new game mode will no doubt get many excited, as it has been a requested game mode in the Destiny community for so long. But on the other side, there are definitely some disappointed that Bungie did not announce a new Destiny expansion today at PSX, which many fans had been hoping for. Many are feeling like Destiny‘s content is running dry, and this new mode may not be enough to pull all those players back.
Also at the keynote, it was announced that Destiny players on PlayStation will receive exclusive rewards the next time Iron Banner comes around.
