[UPDATE: Destiny maintenance has concluded and the servers are back online!]

It was a busy E3 2015 for Bungie as its latest expansion for the popular shooter Destiny was finally revealed during Sony’s press conference. The Taken King aims to be a large update introducing new subclasses for each of the current classes along with a campaign centered around Oryx, who’s seeking revenge for the death of his son, Crota.

While players continue to level up in anticipation for the next content add-on, Bungie has announced a server outage coming today for Destiny. Time to make other plans for a while today, Guardians.

Announcing the news via its Twitter account, Bungie has confirmed that Destiny will be offline later today for what has been termed as maintenance. The outage is expected to last up to six hours and is set to begin at 8amPDT/12pmEDT.

Gamers looking for an explanation were met only with the cryptic phrase, “Future Plans!”, without any additional updates from the developer.

As of this writing, there has been no official word from Bungie explaining why such a lengthy delay is needed, especially for a game that requires players to be online. Speculation has turned to the recently announced expansion, The Taken King, being the focus of this downtime as Bungie prepares the core game in anticipation of it’s release in a few months.

Then again, with the expansion not releasing for a few months at least, perhaps the update is instead related to an upcoming in-game event coming to the game in the months prior to the add-on. With a number of in-game events like The Queen’s Wrath, Iron Banner, and various Crucible playlists, there’s a lot of possibilities as to what this maintenance could be for.

While you’re waiting to shoot some Cabal, make sure to have a look at Game Rant‘s E3 coverage of Destiny: The Taken King from E3 last week, including a hands-on session with the new subclasses.
