Destiny is Second Best Selling FPS Series of All Time

The Destiny franchise has been met with excitement, disappointment and indifference. In short, the games split opinion. The first game came out in 2014 and was well received although the game mechanics were praised, some claimed it wasn't a cohesive game. Destiny 2 was a marked improvement and with numerous successful DLC's the franchise has established itself as a legitimate franchise. The NPD group has now found that the Destiny franchise is the second best selling First-Person Shooter in US dollar sales since its launch in 2014.

When Bungie announced that they were making a game that wasn't Halo, fans were eager to see what would be produced. Initially, the hype generated from being the spiritual successor was somewhat squashed when players realised how different the game was. Since then, Destiny has been listening to fans and changing up the franchise to the delight of many players.

While the Destiny franchise is undeniably a huge commercial success, the figures are only including games from 2014. In comparison, the renowned Halo franchise has only released one first-person shooter game in that time. With that said, Battlefield has released two games in the same timespan and having greater sales that such a well-known franchise is certainly impressive. Not only that, but Destiny is often considered in the top first-person shooter games. It is unsurprising that despite Destiny's success. the titan that is the Call of Duty franchise remains at the top of the first-person shooter sales in this five-year time frame.

Even with new DLC's, Destiny still hasn't managed to please everybody. Destiny 2's Shadowkeep campaign has left some players frustrated because of its disjointed story. The game is still battling for the widespread acclaim that Bungie's other venture, Halo received. Perhaps the game is too divisive to ever have the same place in the hearts of the public as Halo. Yet, this is a new generation of games and Destiny is making a name for itself.

Competing with incredible first-person shooters and being the 7th best selling franchise in all genres since 2014 is something that the Destiny camp will be incredibly proud of. With a new Destiny raid trailer for Garden of Salvation, fans will be happy that they have plenty of content to keep them busy in the future.

Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
