Destiny: Bungie Considering Raid Matchmaking

By | 2 months ago

The video game developer Bungie admits that it is still considering adding matchmaking support for raids in its popular science fiction shooter Destiny.

Although always being on fans’ PvE wishlist, Destiny in its current incarnation lacks the capacity for matchmaking with raids, but it’s possible that the action-RPG could see that change sometime in the near future. As it happens, when speaking to the press outlet Metro about potentially adding the feature to Destiny, world design lead Steve Cotton stated that Bungie has been discussing whether or not it could make its way into the game.

During the interview, Metro asked Cotton about Bungie receiving feedback from Destiny‘s community and how it decides what to include in the title, using the example of fans wanting matchmaking support for raids for the longest time, but ultimately never receiving it. According to the world design lead, the feature isn’t off the table, as the developer has apparently been “thinking about that a lot,” but it has yet to firmly decide if it will actually be incorporated into the game.

Internal discussions at Bungie on the matter of adding the feature have been going on as far back as Destiny‘s launch in 2014, as the game’s lead designer Luke Smith has said at one point that a looking-for-group mechanic is an item that the studio “absolutely want[s] to do.” However, it still hasn’t occurred, and has spurred seemingly endless “conversations” about raid matchmaking ever since.

The Metro interview focuses primarily on Destiny‘s Rise of Iron expansion, but Cotton also spoke in a more widespread manner about Bungie “absolutely listening” to the game’s community, stating that the team often focuses its attention more so on new content instead of looking at additional features such as matchmaking support for raids. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Guardians should completely lose hope that Bungie won’t ever add the feature to Destiny, for it was recently revealed that the long-awaited addition of private matches will be coming with Rise of Iron in September.

While it remains to be seen if Destiny fans will ever finally be able to revel in the glory that is raid matchmaking, Guardians can at least take solace in the fact that Rise of Iron’s forthcoming mission will be closer to the experience of Vault of Glass in that it will be less technical. Plus, Bungie’s design team recently unveiled the fact that players can over-level for the raid Wrath of the Machine.

In the meantime, while fans of the sci-fi shooter await a concrete answer for raid matchmaking, the game’s upcoming community convention known as Destiny Community Con 2016 begins this Saturday, August 27, in Tampa, Florida. Taking this into consideration, the mega meetup for the game could invariably use its sizeable congregation as a means to formally send a message to Bungie to finally add the feature once and for all.

Destiny‘s Rise of Iron expansion is set to release on September 20, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
