'Destiny' DLC Adds Cooperative Battle Arena Called Prison of Elders

Destiny Prison of Elders

The wait for House of Wolves is nearly over. In anticipation of its upcoming release, Bungie has been releasing information all day long about the upcoming House of Wolves DLC expansion for Destiny.

It all started when the House of Wolves prologue dropped. From there, Bungie announced the release date for the DLC add-on, and we now know that House of Wolves will release on May 19th. Now Bungie has released yet another new piece of information about House of Wolves, this time in regards to a brand new game mode that will be added to the game as a part of the expansion.

This new game mode is called the Prison of Elders and represents a new battle arena that will be a part of the DLC's end-game activities. According to Bungie, the Prison of Elders is a cooperative game mode for up to three players (as is usual Destiny fashion) that will focus on "variety, replayability, and skill."

Bungie is being secretive about what exactly Prison of Elders will entail beyond those small details, though. Thankfully, fans don't have to wait long to find out all about the Prison of Elders, because Bungie is planning to showcase a live gameplay demo of the Prison of Elders battle arena on May 6th.

Until then, it's easy to speculate about what Prison of Elders will likely feature. From Bungie's description, it sounds like enemies will come in waves and there will probably be a round-based progression system similar to "battle arenas" featured in other games, but none of this is definitive. As stated previously, Bungie will be pulling the curtain back fully on this new mode come May 6th, so all of our questions will be answered by then.

Unfortunately, this new game mode comes at a price. As it turns out, Prison of Elders is replacing (or serving as an alternative to) the Raid that would've otherwise been included in the House of Wolves expansion. The first expansion pack released for Destiny, The Dark Below, featured a new Raid, so many assumed that House of Wolves would also. However, it was confirmed earlier today that there would be no new Raid in House of Wolves. Luckily for fans, Bungie still plans on releasing a new Raid down the line eventually, but when exactly has yet to be determined.

In the meantime, Bungie has continued to support Destiny with updates and other content since the game launched last September. The game has proven to be very popular, with many gamers still playing it daily. Dedicated fans will undoubtedly purchase House of Wolves as soon as it is available, but will it live up to the hype?

The first expansion, The Dark Below, received a similar amount of hype and pre-release attention, but arguably failed to meet expectations, with many reviewers accusing the add-on of not offering enough content for the price. That being said, Bungie is one of the world's most renowned developers, so it is likely that they have learned from their mistakes, and despite the lack of a new Raid, the Prison of Elders seems like it will be adding more bang for the consumer's buck than The Dark Below did.

The House of Wolves expansion for Destiny will be available to download on May 19th for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
