In their weekly update, Bungie announces that a December patch is coming to Destiny that will give new purpose and utility to Etheric Light and Wormspore.

If players have come to expect anything from Destiny, it’s that the game’s developer Bungie will regularly modify, add, tweak, and subtract from the game through frequent patches. There have been numerous changes made to Destiny’s economy, and with each expansion new forms of currency have been added. In House of Wolves the material Etheric Light was introduced, but since the release of The Taken King, the once sought-after currency has no purpose.

But soon players will have a reason for Etheric Light again. In their Weekly Update, Bungie announced that a game update in December will give new utility to the dormant Etheric Light. They also mentioned that The Taken King’s new planetary material Wormspore will gain additional uses in the same update.

[Y]ou’ll see yet more welcome changes to the in-game economy in the December update. Rumor has it that Petra will have use for your Etheric Light, and Eris has been asking if anyone out there is hoarding a surplus of Worm Spore. Turns out she loves the stuff.

Go back in time to May 2015, shortly after the launch of House of Wolves, and Destiny players were desperate for Etheric Light. It was the new endgame material, dropping from the two highest tiers of the Prison of Elders, as well as Nightfall Strikes and Trials of Osiris packages.

Etheric Light's function was to instantly upgrade any weapon to the new level cap, which at the time was 34. Lucky players who got Etheric Light to drop within the first few days of the expansion were instantly at the Level 34 cap.

Etheric Light enabled all guns to be relevant again as well. It raised Fatebringer from the dead, unthawed the previously frozen stats of the Vex Mythoclast, and dug Shadow Price from the darkness of Guardians’ Vaults. Players rejoiced that their entire arsenals were worthwhile again.

But it wasn’t long before players had used Etheric Light on their entire active inventory, and were starting to build up a surplus. Going into The Taken King in September, players had dozens of Etheric Light, and were excited to see what this end-game material could do in the new expansion. However, players quickly found out that, in The Taken King, Etheric Light does nothing. Nothing at all.

Bungie acknowledged it, saying that they were working on a new use for the currency. Now, players know that a solution has been created, but are still left in the dark as to what Etheric Light’s new function could be. Could be that Etheric Light is used in exchange for something else that’s useful like a cluster of Strange Coins, or it could have a new unforeseeable use.

Another material getting some much needed utility is Wormspore. This planetary material can be farmed in the new Dreadnaught public space or by pretty much doing anything on the Dreadnaught including the King’s Fall Raid. Players have found themselves sitting on hundreds if not thousands of Wormspore with little use for it. Yes, Wormspore is supposed to help upgrade armor and weapons, but very few items actually use it.

Bungie has yet to announce specifically what Etheric Light and Wormspore will do, and community manager DeeJ said he will detail the December update after he returns from vacation, so answers could be weeks (not days) away. In the meantime, hold onto those Etheric Light and Wormspore.

Do you have a large collection of Etheric Light and Wormspore in Destiny? What new uses do you hope these materials will have?
