Today, Bungie hosted a special broadcast in which it talked in-depth about the future of Destiny 2. This included everything big and small, including the new season (Season of the Arrivals) and the next expansion, Beyond Light. The developer also talked about the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, season 12 and season 13, the next two expansions titled The Witch Queen and Lightfall, and so much more.

It's clear that Bungie intends to continue supporting Destiny 2 and even, self-admittedly, fixing a few areas where it dropped the ball. To do so, however, Bungie also commented on the possibility of Destiny 3.

In short, anyone hoping for a third entry shouldn't expect yet another box art with a number; instead, the future of the franchise is going to take place in Destiny 2 with this on-going support, vaulting of old content, and more. D2 director Luke Smith explained that Bungie didn't want to start over from scratch, forcing players to begin this journey all over again, and forcing Destiny 2 to "go dark." Development on the threequel would mean less or a complete lack of support for the current iteration of the franchise, which goes against this single, evolving MMO world Bungie has aspired to create.

Luke Smith put it succinctly by saying, "we don't want to put another number on a box," instead offering the alternative of cycling older, less played content into the new Destiny 2 content vault and add new support with its upcoming expansions. It'll also be used to bring original Destiny content into D2, unvaulting activities each year, and more additions to the game like the new Stasis damage type. Bungie's comments can be seen at the 47:00-minute mark in the video below:

This vault also supports the idea of not forcing players to start over with Destiny 3 and creates a direct line of cyclable content to keep the game coming for years. For example, the Vault of Glass raid is coming to Destiny 2 in Year 4, and so this will hopefully go a long way into bringing Destiny 2 back to the forefront of the looter shooter genre and where the game wants to be.

Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
