Fans and analysts alike have speculated that Bungie will release Destiny 3 in 2020, perhaps alongside the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles. However, it appears as though Bungie is not ready to move on from Destiny 2 just yet. The Destiny 2020 Director's Cut post from Bungie suggests that the studio will be focused on Destiny 2 throughout 2020 and even going into next year, so fans shouldn't expect to see Destiny 3 until 2021 at the earliest.

The Destiny 2020 Director's Cut post discusses Bungie's goals for Destiny 2 this year. In the post, the development team states that it will focus on "aspiration" throughout 2020 and into 2021. This means that the team will work on adding content to Destiny 2 that aims to make the player feel "hope or ambition of achieving something," as Bungie feels "aspiration" is the driving force behind why people continue to play Destiny 2.

Part of the way that Bungie is hoping to bring aspiration back to Destiny 2 is through the return of the Trials of Osiris. Like past iterations of the game mode, the Trials of Osiris will allow Destiny 2 players to unlock special rewards. This includes Year 1 Trials of Osiris armor along with new rewards that players will be able to unlock by participating in the Trials.

The Trials of Osiris isn't the only thing Bungie has up its sleeve when it comes to keeping Destiny 2 fans engaged with the game throughout 2020. However, some Destiny fans may have had their fill of Destiny 2 and its seasonal event structure. Those ready to move on to Destiny 3 shouldn't expect the game to come this year, but perhaps they will luck out in 2021. However, we should note that there's also a distinct possibility that Destiny 3 won't come until 2022.

That's because of Bungie's five-year plan for Destiny 2. While it's possible Bungie will divert from this vision, if it doesn't, that would mean that Destiny 3 wouldn't launch until 2022.

If Destiny 3 is truly that far off, then Destiny 2 fans can count on Bungie releasing a lot of new content for the game between now and then. Fans should be able to expect expansions on the level of Shadowkeep every once in awhile, in addition to the seasonal events that the studio has been releasing. Whether or not this content will be enough to create the "aspiration" that Bungie is hoping for remains to be seen, however.

Destiny 3 has yet to be announced.
