While Destiny 2’s new Mercury patrol area offers “new” enemies to fight, Public Events to complete, and quests to explore, it will lack a few basic flourishes. Just today, for example, Bungie revealed that Xur will never set up shop on Mercury, despite the area being a patrol zone.

For those that may not know, it is common practice for the Flashpoint in Destiny 2 to double as Xur’s “hiding spot.” So when Mercury came up as the Flashpoint most people assumed that he would also appear on the Vex-infested planet. This would be the first time that Xur sold exotics on Mercury, so many were excited to see where he might hide.

Unfortunately, Bungie community support manager dmg04 confirmed that Xur won't/can’t appear on Mercury. He also made a joke that Xur considers the planet far too bright for his liking, but we’re guessing the real reason has more to do with this being a DLC area.

Bungie has already dealt with a ton of criticism regarding the DLC lockout that divides vanilla Destiny 2 players and those that purchased Curse of Osiris, and putting Xur on a DLC-only destination would have only further exacerbated things. This is a case where Bungie is getting ahead of the potential backlash and making sure that all players have access to Xur when he arrives this weekend.

It’s a good thing too since Xur will start selling two new items this week. First up is the Fated Engram, a one-time purchase that will drop an exotic item that players have not currently unlocked. Eventually Destiny 2 will add backend systems that attempt to lessen the amount of exotic duplicates players receive, but for now, the Fated Engram is a path towards new drops every week.

This week will also see the return of the Three of Coins, an extremely popular consumable from Destiny 1. However, Bungie has tweaked the way Three of Coins will work, eliminating a lot of the guesswork involved with when is best to use the consumable. Look for more information on how exactly Three of Coins work when Xur returns on Friday morning.

Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
