For the third time in its history in Destiny 2, the Whisper of the Worm exotic sniper rifle is receiving a nerf. The changes to the weapon will go live with the Season 7 update, which paves the way for new Season of Opulence content.

In its weekly blog post, developer Bungie detailed some of the sandbox balance changes that will be coming to Destiny 2 with Season of Opulence. The studio had previously revealed that the Not Forgotten and Luna’s Howl pinnacle weapons would be seeing changes to impact PvP balance, and now Whisper of the Worm is seeing its effectiveness reduced to balance PvE.

After the update, Whisper of the Worm will lose its ability to create ammo from thin air thanks to the White Nail perk. With the perk and as long as players hit three precision hits in a row, they would replenish their 3 bullets with no penalty to reserve ammo or need to reload. Now, White Nail will draw directly from the weapon’s reserve ammo, which was nerfed down to 9 shots but is being increased to 18 shots without armor perks in Season 7.

Bungie says that this change is meant to give players more options when it comes to DPS weapons, but many will argue that they are going about it the wrong way. Instead of forcing players off of Whisper of the Worm by making it worse, the goal should be to make other weapons better. And as a heavy sniper, Whisper of the Worm is meant to be strong, but now it is turning into Black Spindle from Destiny 1 Year 3.

Still with 18 bullets and the Whispered Breathing perk (obtained by completing the Whisper of the Worm’s catalyst), Whisper of the Worm should still be pretty effective for boss DPS. It may now see some competition from the likes of Thunderlord, DARCI, or the recently released Outbreak Perfected pulse rifle, but we wouldn’t be surprised to still see raid groups using it in Season 7.

Nevertheless, there is a frustrating sense that a lot of Season 7 is focused on nerfs and not buffs. Bungie is trying to reveal these Destiny 2 Season of Opulence changes ahead of time to prepare players but at the same time, they are not giving fans a lot of things to look forward to. Perhaps once the content discussions around Season of Opulence start, then some of that excitement can build.

Destiny 2 Season of Opulence starts on June 4, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
