After a year of predictable behavior from Destiny 2's exotic merchant Xur, the latest Sandbox Update as breathed new life into the creature. Taking a page out of its predecessor's playbook, Xur now randomly appears somewhere in one of the many destinations rather than predictably appearing in the Flashpoint location for that week. In addition to kicking off a sort of Easter egg hunt, his fated engram is also undergoing a little change once Forsaken launches. Fans won't be able to use it to acquire new exotic weapons and gear as it will continue to use the year 1 exotic loot table.

Even though he's a little bit different than what players have seen in the past, Xur's function remains the same, offering exotic loot and consumables in exchange for Legendary Shards. Here's a rundown on where to find Xur as well as what he's offering from August 31 until he heads back home before the launch of Destiny 2: Forsaken on September 3.

Where is Xur?

As previously mentioned, the mystery surrounding Xur has returned, forcing players to actually search for the exotic merchant. In order to save you some time, you can find Xur hanging out in the European Dead Zone. While there's no icon showing his exact location anymore, the merchant can be found in his usual spot within the Winding Cove on a ledge above the Fallen.

Class Armor

This week, Xur has brought one exotic armor piece from each of the stages of year one of Destiny 2. His inventory this week includes the Knucklehead Radar for Hunters, Ashen Wake Titan gauntlets, and the Vesper of Radius chest armor for Warlocks. While the inventory isn't that interesting, what's exciting is that these items all look to feature newly randomized rolls. Still, with Forsaken launching in just a few days, it may be worth it for players to save their resources for a shot at new gear starting next week.

The newly updated Knucklehead Radar helmet for Hunters essentially acts like the Mida Multi-Tool scout rifle, giving players access to their radar even when aiming down the sights. The Upgraded Sensor Pack park has recently been enhanced in the Sandbox Update to also provide enhanced radar resolution when the player is crouched as well. Naturally, being able to keep an eye on radar while using weapon sights is pretty valuable, so this is a solid choice for Hunters who don't yet have this item.

Introduced as part of the Warmind expansion, the Ashen Wake gauntlets for Titans directly affect Fusion grenades. Through the Bring the Heat perk, fusion grenades explode on impact, gain increased throw speed, and recharge grenade energy on direct hits. Since players need to be using Fusion grenades in order to get the most out of this class item, they're hard to recommend for normal use.

Finally, Warlocks can pick up the Vesper of Radius chest armor that supercharges player rifts. Planetary Torrent causes an electrical shockwave to erupt outwards when the rift is initially cast by the player. In addition, rift energy recharges faster when the player is surrounded by enemies. With the Rift being an important tool in a Warlock's arsenal either for restoring health or increasing damage, this is another solid choice for those who don't yet have this exotic item.

Exotic Weapon

When it was first introduced as part of the Curse of Osiris expansion, the Prometheus Lens was a weapon that could literally melt enemies. This was in large part due to a bug that slipped into the release, making it the common sight in the Crucible before its inevitable nerf. While it's gone half a year being outclassed by other power weapons, Trace rifles received a decent buff in the latest Sandbox update, making them a viable choice once more. Thanks to its Prismatic Inferno perk, players can create an ever-expanding heat field to damage enemies the longer the gun is fired. Along with Coldheart and the upcoming Wavesplitter, trace rifles look to be making a comeback in year 2.

As usual, Xur also has his typical selection of consumable items as well, including the Fated Engram, Three of Coins, and the Five of Swords. However, Bungie is retiring Three of Coins with the launch of Forsaken, so we recommend skipping out on the consumable.

Here's the complete rundown of Xur's entire stock for Aug 31 - Sept 3:

  • Ashen Wake (Titan gauntlets) – 23 Legendary Shards
  • Knucklehead Radar (Hunter helmet) – 23 Legendary Shards
  • Vesper of Radius (Warlock chest armor) – 23 Legendary Shards
  • Prometheus Lens (Linear Trace Rifle) – 29 Legendary Shards
  • Fated Engram – 97 Legendary Shards
  • Three of Coins – 31 Legendary Shards
  • Five of Swords Challenge Card
