The Wardcliff Coil can be a ludicrously fun weapon to wield in Destiny 2. The Mad Scientist perk causes the Rocket Launcher to fire a swarm of rockets that spew out of the gun and try to home in on enemies. This makes it a great weapon for shredding a single tough target or clearing out a swarm of adds.

How To Find The Wardcliff Coil Catalyst

Destiny 2 Nightfall Opponent

The Wardcliff Coil Catalyst is a random reward that can occur whenever the player completes either a Heroic or Nightfall Strike. Because its appearance is entirely random, it can happen very quickly or take quite a bit of grinding to appear.

It also doesn’t matter whether the player pursues Nightfall or Heroic Strikes, as the drop rate doesn’t seem to be impacted. All that matters is successfully completing the Strike, so the player should choose whichever they’re most comfortable completing.

Upgrading The Wardcliff Coil Catalyst

Destiny 2 Wardcliff Coil Vostok

To upgrade the Wardcliff Coil Catalyst, the player will need to kill 500 enemies using the Wardcliff Coil. That means the final blow must be dealt with the rocket barrage, or the subsequent explosion. It also doesn’t matter if the enemy is a PVE foe or a Guardian.

Some of those kills can also be obtained retroactively. If the player achieved any kills using Wardcliff Coil before obtaining the Wardcliff Coil Catalyst they will count towards the 500. Be forewarned that some players have stated that not all kills are counted and it can be a bit buggy at times.

Because successfully completing Heroic or Nightfall Strikes is the trigger for getting the Wardcliff Coil Catalyst, it pays to quickly and efficiently complete these events. It can do wonders to join a fireteam that’s committed to grinding these strikes as quickly as possible.

Getting the upgrade should be relatively easy if the player uses the Wardcliff Coil in places like the Shattered Throne with unlimited spawning adds. It’s also a good idea to get a feel for how the Wardcliff Coil Catalyst impacts the projectiles, to see how forgiving aiming has now become. It’s also not a bad idea to grind for other Catalysts while upgrading or pursuing the Wardcliff Coil Catalyst. For instance, the Sunshot Catalyst also has a chance to drop during any Strike.

Advice On Using Wardcliff Coil

The Wardcliff Coil is a beast for just about any situation. It does great single target damage and can bomb a group with a decent radius. It’s still a Rocket Launcher so players will want to pair it with more precise weaponry like Linear Fusion Rifles. But it’s hard to argue with the Wardcliff Coil’s results. Even if the player has better weapons in their arsenal it’s one of the more fun weapons to use that remains viable in just about any type of combat.

In PVP this weapon will blast apart single Guardians or groups of them. Many players are aware of the tracking ability and have learned ways to avoid the worst of the damage. Just because the weapon has locked on someone, doesn’t mean they’ll take every point of damage.

In PVE this weapon truly shines as it can bring down the toughest bosses or clear a room of ads in a hurry. Hunters equipped with something like the Mask of Bakris can raise their Arc damage even further with a few well-timed dodges.
