In the reveal trailer for Destiny 2, we learned that The Last City had fallen after a devastating attack perpetrated by the Cabal. It's since been confirmed that these forces are led by a ruthless tactician known as Ghaul, and now we know that the character will be portrayed by veteran voice actor Neil Kaplan.

Kaplan has been lending his voice to roles for almost thirty years, appearing in various iterations of the Power Rangers franchise, as well as animated series like Bleach, Naruto, and Transformers: Robots in Disguise, where he played Optimus Prime. In terms of video games, he's worked on Heroes of the Storm, Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Last of Us, and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.

The actor has an impressive list of roles to his name already, but his appearance in Destiny 2 could be one of his biggest. Ghaul's strike on Earth sets the game's plot in motion, and it seems very likely that he will be the final boss of its brand new raid.

The so-called "Red War" between the Cabal and the Guardians was one of the first things we learned about Destiny 2, with hints at the conflict being leaked by toys and concept art. Since Ghaul is heading up the enemy forces, it's reasonable to expect that he will have a presence throughout the campaign.

Unlike many of the antagonists we saw in Destiny, it's already been confirmed that Ghaul speaks English. Interestingly enough, Bungie's community manager Luke Smith compared his personality to Die Hard baddie Hans Gruber in a recent interview, although it's difficult to determine exactly what the similarities are at this point in time.

Here's hoping that Ghaul is a memorable villain for the Guardians to take on. The original Destiny was perhaps a little light on truly memorable characters, but it seems clear that Bungie is doing everything in its power to ensure that the sequel makes up for any previous missteps.

Destiny 2 launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 8, 2017.
