Xbox and PlayStation are the two biggest names in gaming today and the battle between the brand's respective fan bases is a big part of the gaming community. While, despite their rivalry, both companies generally try to maintain a level of civility, every so often a story surfaces that shows the tug-of-war between the two is alive and well. Today, one of those stories came to light, this time surrounding the trailer for the new Destiny 2 expansion Forsaken.

As spotted by one eagle-eyed Reddit user today, Sony has seemingly censored an Xbox One controller seen in the trailer for Forsaken. Currently, the trailer released during the recent Bungie livesteam, which showed off all the new content coming to Destiny 2, is available on the official YouTube channels for PlayStation, Xbox, and Bungie, though the video uploaded to the PlayStation channel is ever so slightly different.

During a scene showing a Bungie team member working on the expansion, the developer is shown holding an Xbox One controller, presumably because the controller is more compatible with a PC, except in the video uploaded to the PlayStation channel the controller has been blurred out. You can see the comparison down below.

The logic behind this decision is simple, even if it is rather ridiculous. Sony sees Destiny as a PlayStation brand, despite that fact it is available on other consoles. Thanks to a marketing deal between Sony and Destiny publisher Activision, PlayStation gets content not available to Xbox players, from strikes and missions to armor and exotic weapons. Sony doesn't want to pay money for exclusivity in Destiny only to show its creators seemingly preferring the competitions hardware.

That being said the idea that a few seconds of an Xbox controller in a developer's hands could damage or otherwise impact the PlayStation brand and its hold over Destiny is foolish. The first thing gamers are going to be influenced by is content and Sony currently controls that with regards to Destiny. What can do more harm is that stories like this make Sony and PlayStation seem scared of or hostile towards competition.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. At E3 last year Xbox debuted gamplay for Anthem, which had been optimized for the Xbox One X. Soon after PlayStation released their own version of the footage marketed as Anthem on the PS4, but the footage was soon revealed to just be the Xbox One X footage with PlayStation buttons photoshopped over it.

Despite any of the console war chaos behind the trailer, fans of Destiny on Xbox and PS4 alike are understandably excited about what was shown. Bungie seems to finally be addressing many of the serious concerns players have had with the game since launch, bringing back old content removed after the original Destiny and adding in new content like weapon slot customization and the Gambit game mode. Hopefully it isn't all too little too late.

Destiny 2: Forsaken will launch this September 4th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
