The Token system in Destiny 2, which drew ire from players since the game's launch, will be retired with Update 2.0 launching on August 28. Tokens will no longer be a part of the economy, as the game reverts the system back to something closer to that which was seen in Destiny 1—an economy based on destination materials.

Destination materials will now serve multiple functions as Destiny 2 enters into the Forsaken expansion and its Year 2. Instead of earning Tokens and turning them in for reputation on each destination, destination materials will now serve that function. Additionally, destination materials will now be a part of the cost for infusing weapons and armor, instead of just Glimmer and Legendary Shards.

But players shouldn't go dismantling all the Tokens in their inventory. While the game will stop distributing Tokens, players who still have them can turn them in even after August 28 as usual for reputation gains. But everything in Destiny 2 that previously rewarded Tokens, such as challenges, will now give out materials specific to each destination.

Speaking of challenges, developer Bungie says that they will be replaced with bounties that can be picked up at each destination's vendor and they will award destination materials. In addition, Rare destination materials will also be removed so that the only currency players will be collecting for each destination is the green Common version of materials.

This change does not look like it will impact the game in a huge way but is more of a streamlining of reputation currencies on each destination. With the added bounties and the straight replacement of materials for Tokens, it doesn't appear that players will be starved for materials at a more severe level than how the current economy functions. Although, of course, players will need to get their hands on these changes to fully gauge how much of an impact they will have.

Again, these changes go live on August 28 with the arrival of Update 2.0.
