This week, Destiny 2 developer Bungie brought back its Three of Coins consumable in an effort to increase exotic drops for players. However, after a few days with the consumable, many seem to believe Three of Coins is either bugged or its effect is not working properly.

In Destiny 1, Three of Coins was something of a mystery. When it first launched, Bungie did not predict the farming methods players would come up with, but eventually the developers settled on a general cooldown for the consumable’s use. And so what players would do is pop a Three of Coins before any major raid boss or strike encounter, wait to see if an exotic dropped, and then pop one again before the next boss kill.

For Destiny 2, however, Three of Coins work very differently. Instead of a one-time buff that exhausts after a boss kill, the consumable has a general four hour effect. So when a player uses a Three of Coins they are expected to see increased exotic engram drops for the duration of the buff. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case.

Currently, the Destiny 2 community is running a survey to see just how effective Three of Coins can be, and thus far the numbers are disappointing. With about 1,250 hours reported, the average drop rate for an exotic engram is .16. That translates to about 6 hours per exotic engram, meaning players would need to consume two Three of Coins just to get one exotic.

For many Destiny 2 players, there doesn’t actually seem to be a benefit to the Three of Coins. It is common for a player to use the Three of Coins and never see an exotic engram drop for the entire four hour period. Personally, the only time I was able to play for a full four hours with Three of Coins active I only saw one exotic engram drop.

The obvious question now is whether the Three of Coins is bugged in Destiny 2 or if it is working as intended. Assuming that the intent is to give players a better rate of 1 exotic engram per Three of Coins use then there must be something wrong with the consumable. Or perhaps Bungie never intended for Three of Coins to “make it rain” exotics at all.

Whatever the case may be, we likely won’t find out the status of the Three of Coins until Bungie has a little more information to work with and after the Dawning event next week. That being said, based on these early numbers it does seem like Three of Coins is not operating as intended.
