Destiny 2's Witch Queen expansion has been officially out for just over a month now, and it rapidly became one of the favorite releases in the entire franchise for many fans. The buildup to the release of The Witch Queen was quite intense, narratively speaking, and there also was a lot of hype surrounding the reveal of Savathun's in-game look and the fact that she was going to have an army of Hive Lightbearers. The expansion also introduced many new features for Destiny 2 players to toy with, such as the rework of Void subclasses and weapon crafting, further building on the idea that crafting one's own build is a major point in the game.

To make things even better, Bungie released Season of the Risen as the accompanying seasonal content for The Witch Queen. Season of the Risen is now considered one of the best Destiny 2 releases since Bungie adopted the seasonal model, and the reason is that it ties into the themes of The Witch Queen, and also it has a great story that concluded after only four weeks, as opposed to Season of the Lost.

All these components created the perfect storm for The Witch Queen to be one of the best experiences Destiny 2 ever provided to its fans, and the cherry on top of the cake was a perfectly balanced campaign that was both challenging and rewarding. As such, it doesn't come as a surprise that Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is now one of the highest rated games of the year, even if 2022 packed many exciting releases thus far. According to its score on Metacritic, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is the third-highest rated game of 2022 across all platforms, with a score of 89 on PS5.

Destiny 2 the witch queen

Technically, Destiny 2 itself is in fifth place and The Witch Queen, as a standalone DLC, is in seventh place, but it's worth noting that Elden Ring takes every place from first to third with slight variations in its reviews based on platforms. As such, as a unique game, Destiny 2 is to be considered the third highest, with God of War taking the second place overall with a Metascore of 93. The Witch Queen ranks third on PC, second on PS5, and fourth on Xbox Series X.

Destiny 2's Witch Queen expansion also came with several new Exotic items to improve the general experience of the game, and one of them managed to go above and beyond. In fact, a legally blind Destiny 2 player praised Bungie for the Osteo Striga SMG, which fires homing projectiles that make it more merciful to aim at the general direction of a target rather than trying to actively hit them. Maybe this was an unintentional silver lining, but it adds to the long list of reasons why The Witch Queen is so successful.

Destiny 2 is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
