With Season 14 of Destiny 2: Beyond Light roughly a week away, players are preparing themselves for the next major storyline in the open-world shooter. Notably, with the introduction of the armor transmog system comes the removal of shaders from all player inventories. For some, that means spending at least a solid 30 minutes dismantling shaders in exchange for Glimmer and Legendary Shards.

Glimmer is capped at 250,000, but Legendary Shards are all but limitless. Guardians assumed at first that the maximum stack possible was 999, though the abundance of ways in which Destiny 2 players can get their hands on the resource has grown exponentially. Now, even in the aftermath of an infinite Legendary Shard glitch, players are still curious as to how many Legendary Shards they can hold at once.

Even prior to the Legendary Shard glitch, players have reported having tens of thousands of shards with no apparent end in sight. According to one player over on the Bungie forums, they had managed to reach around 64,000 Legendary Shards without limitation, and a later edit stated they had even surpassed 100,000.

What's The Legendary Shard Cap?

Accordingly, since the maximum number exceeds 100,000, one could assume that the Legendary Shard cap simply goes up to 999,999. On the other hand, it's entirely possible that Bungie never considered implementing a hard limit on Legendary Shards. Most resources in Destiny 2 have some maximum amount that players can hold. Despite the abundance of Legendary Shards players receive, they usually go straight into upgrading weapons and gear. Due to that, Bungie probably figured that no one would ever reach such a high amount.

Although the question of how many shards a Guardian can hold is one that sparks immense curiosity, it certainly isn't relevant to what Destiny 2 players need to do before Season 13 ends. Unless another Legendary Shard glitch pops up, few will come remotely close to casually holding over 100,000 shards. Also, the climb to one million shards would probably take months if not years, and sounds virtually impossible otherwise.

Granted, the transmog system requires a minimum of 13 years to convert every armor piece, so the grind for an infinite number of Legendary Shards wouldn't be too bad. Still, grinding exclusively for the resource doesn't do much to help in the endgame. Higher-level gear requires Enhancement Cores, Prisms, and Ascendant Shards to be fully Masterworked. Farming for those resources takes far more time and effort and usually gives Legendary Shards anyway.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
