The full gameplay reveal of Destiny 2 is just days away, and in the run up to showing off more about the sequel to Destiny, a new promotional image appears to have just unveiled a new weapon class. That weapon class could be a submachine gun, a type of weapon that has been rumored since last year.

The image comes from a gif uploaded by the official Destiny Twitter account, teasing the Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere on Thursday, May 18th.

It took almost no time for fans to notice that the Warlock in the image appears to be holding a different weapon than in the first round of marketing images, which showed a male version of the subclass wielding a shotgun.

While at a first quick glance, the gun has a similar profile to a shotgun, under closer inspection it appears to be much smaller. For one, it has a scope, a much shorter length, and what looks to be a silencer-style barrel.

Destiny 2 events post-launch DLC

While it could be something other than a submachine gun, there is good reason to believe that's exactly what it is. Eight months ago, just days before the release of the Rise of Iron expansion, fans spotted the SMG class in the Destiny API. The theory at the time was that this was a new weapon that would be added when Rise of Iron released, a well-kept secret that fans would discover after the launch of the expansion. But that never happened and submachine guns have never made their way to the game.

If this is a submachine gun, and the weapon class is in Destiny 2, it's likely that Bungie will show them off later this week during the Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere. Virtually no specifics are known about Destiny 2's gameplay, so there's not much to go on about how this new weapon could potentially fit into the combat sandbox for Destiny 2, which could undergo any number of minor or major changes.

Unless there are any leaks before then, it looks like fans will have to wait until May 18th to find out the truth about this mysterious weapon.

Destiny 2 will launch September 8, 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
