It’s a big week for Destiny 2 players with several new events and activities including Festival of the Lost. However, the activity that most players are looking forward to is the launch of the new dungeon.

While the dungeon became available at reset on Tuesday morning, Destiny 2 players could not access it right away. Instead they need to complete a basic intro quest and then the new Shadowkeep dungeon will unlock.

The quest has two steps that work simultaneous and tie into a new public event called Altars of Sorrow. They are:

  • Loot an Altar of Sorrow chest at Tier 3 or higher
  • Kill 20 Nightmares

In Sorrow’s Harbor, a series of waves will occur in which the fireteam (and nearby Guardians) must take down a specific number of Nightmares within a certain amount of time. Killing any enemy adds time to the countdown.

The first step on the Destiny 2: Shadowkeep dungeon unlock quest is to loot a Tier 3 (or higher) chest from the Altar of Sorrow activity. Each time that the team successfully defeats the specified number of Nightmares they will unlock a new Tier at a new location. Head to the glowing mist, kill the Nightmares that spawn, and repeat the process.

Once the team reaches Tier 3 that can fail the wave and claim the chest to complete the quest. However, if the team makes it to Tier 5 and completes it they will unlock the final boss. This is worth doing because the second step on the quest requires the player to defeat 20 total Nightmares. Ideally, the quest should be complete by the time the Altar of Sorrow event is finished.

After opening a Tier 3+ chest and defeating 20 Nightmares the quest will complete and the Pit of Heresy dungeon will be available. Unlike the Shattered Throne dungeon from Destiny 2: Forsaken, this new dungeon appears right on the map and players can launch it from the directory.

Fireteams are currently making their way through the new Destiny 2 dungeon but be warned that its recommended power level is 940. It’s best to take a top tier weapon loadout for survivability and to deal enough damage to take out enemies. We won’t give anything away but players are going to face enemies with a lot of health.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
