Destiny 2's The Witch Queen was one of this year's most anticipated early releases, and fans were not disappointed by the new campaign and all the changes the expansion was packed with. The Witch Queen's themes revolved around the new Lucent Brood of the Hive - Hive combatants blessed with the powers of the Light, as Savathun was. Players take the role of psychic detectives, delving into an intricate web of lies and illusions that were either created by Savathun or deceptions even the Hive God fell into.

The Witch Queen's campaign was a great success both from a gameplay perspective and a narrative standpoint, mixing a compelling plot and villain with difficult missions and morally gray areas to explore. Destiny 2 fans were pleased to discover that the seasonal storyline in Season of the Risen complements this, which is good after criticism surrounding the Seasons in previous expansions. Season of the Risen's story came to an unexpected conclusion today, which ties up multiple loose ends in Destiny 2's overarching narrative.

How Destiny 2's Season of the Risen Connects Several Plot Points

Destiny 2 Best Weapons In Season Of The Risen

Season of the Risen is relatively short compared to many other Destiny 2 releases, with some seasonal narratives like Season of the Lost lasting for several weeks before being halted prior to an epilogue. In this case, Bungie tied Season of the Risen's story to The Witch Queen campaign, and it was all about the Lucent Brood and their alliance with Caiatl's Cabal. Because the alliance with the Cabal is such an important part of the narrative, it was interesting to see how some characters dealt with the events of this Season, such as interactions between Lord Saladin and Crow.

In Season of the Lost, Crow learned about his past life as Uldren Sov, and this revelation shook him to the point that he didn't know what to think of himself. In Season of the Risen, all of Crow's doubts resurface when the Vanguard and Caiatl arrange for the Lucent Brood to be captured and analyzed by the Cabal empress' trusted Psion in order to learn about their plan. Crow felt empathy toward the tortured Hive and started questioning the Vanguard's methods.

During the epilogue for Season of the Risen, Destiny 2 players discover that Crow destroyed Caiatl's laboratory to stop the Hive torturing, but this killed the empress' Psion. Caiatl demanded justice in the ways of the Cabal, meaning a life for a life, and Crow was ready to accept the consequences of his actions. However, Saladin stepped in to prevent Crow's death and keep the allegiance with the Cabal intact. This cost the honored Guardian everything, as Caiatl didn't take his life; instead she forced him to be on her War Council until the end of his days.

This ending is likely addressing the comments Bungie made about the return of Spoiler Alert, as Crow was meant to die but Saladin gave up his life to protect him - at least metaphorically speaking. Furthermore, in a parting message, Saladin states that he won't be around much apart from Iron Banner, for which Caiatl grants him permission to coordinate Guardian activities. Saladin also states that Caiatl has her own ideas to improve Iron Banner, canonizing changes coming to the game mode in the future, with Saladin possibly getting the same rework as Destiny 2's Trials of Osiris and Saint-14's vendor page. Ultimately, these events tie up several plot points from recent releases, and they also pave the way for what's to come.

Destiny 2 is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
