Season of the Deep is already plenty hyped in the Destiny 2 community, but it also has big shoes to fill. The previous Season of Defiance has been highly controversial and divisive in the community, and mixed with the reviews for the Lightfall expansion, Destiny 2 has had a rough patch recently.
With a returning destination in the picture, along with the possibility for Guardians to face off with a variety of Hive Gods, expectations for the new Season are incredibly high. Also, with all the reworks incoming, the community is very anxious to see how impactful the new Season will be when Season of the Deep is released.
What Players Expect From Destiny 2's Season of the Deep After Season of Defiance
The community still needs to see Xivu Arath and Savathun return in Destiny 2’s story. After the events of the Witch Queen campaign, it’s only a matter of time before Savathun returns, instead of a question of if. The Vanguard has been increasingly relying on forces of the Darkness lately, like the Strand subclass in particular, so this trend may continue for the season following the Lightfall expansion. Ultimately, when Savathun does finally return, things are pointing toward a potential alliance with the Guardians this time around. Season of the Deep is already known to focus on the Hive, so Xivu Arath, as well as Savathun, are at the top of most players' expectations. Either way, there’s still plenty more to explore with these two Hive gods in particular, so of course fans are eager to see them return sooner than later.
One of the big features that was revealed about Season of the Deep is that guardians will be returning to the planet Titan. Most of the rumors and leaks for Destiny 2 leading up to Season 21 speculated this, but the promotional material from the weeks leading up to Season of the Deep finally confirmed it. Since players are returning to Titan and especially since the season will focus on Hive, players are expecting to finally confront the Hive Worm God that lurks in Titan’s methane oceans.
Another part of Season of the Deep that players are skeptical about is the seasonal story. The community certainly wasn’t shy to express its frustrations about Season of Defiance’s story, which doesn’t bode well for the Season that immediately follows. Bungie has previously stated before the Lightfall expansion was released that seasonal storytelling would be getting a rework in the near future due to player feedback. Season of the Deep may finally be the start of that makeover going forward, but there have been no specific details as to when these changes will start applying to Destiny 2’s Seasons.
Thanks to Bungie’s community updates for Destiny 2, fans know to expect a lot of tuning for Exotic armor and the underperforming Supers in Season of the Deep. The biggest part about these changes is that the best Exotic armor pieces are getting downgraded while the underdog pieces are getting buffed. Especially since some of the community’s favorite Exotics are being nerfed, the pressure is on for the other Exotics to get brought up to the baseline for being useful in Destiny 2’s endgame content.
Season of the Deep will also release Lightfall’s first dungeon, with another dungeon on the way sometime before The Final Shape expansion. The one thing that players expect out of the dungeon before the season starts is how the difficulty will compare to other content in Destiny 2. Lightfall’s Root of Nightmares raid and Neomuna patrol sparked plenty of debate about how Destiny 2 balances difficulties in certain activities, so the tension is extremely high. Ultimately the new dungeon is stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the difficulty of the activity.
