Destiny 2 director Luke Smith continues his trend of releasing lengthy articles regarding Bungie's plans for the future and the upcoming Shadowkeep expansion. Today Smith dropped a new piece titled "Seasons in Destiny 2's Third Year." The bulk of the article deals with Destiny 2: Shadowkeep's first season, the Season of the Undying, as well as Bungie's broader plans for Year 3. However, there's also a hint at Bungie's specific plans for the second season following Shadowkeep's launch.

Season 8 of Destiny 2 will begin with the launch of Destiny 2's Shadowkeep expansion. The so-called Season of the Undying will deal with an influx of Vex "pouring out across the surface of the Moon." This is due to what Smith describes as the events of "JacketQuest," believed to be Season of Opulence's Crown of Sorrow raid. The world first completion of the Crown of Sorrow raid rewarded a real-life price of jackets for the full raid team. JacketQuest led to a portal opening to the infamous Black Garden.

Smith continues, dropping some light spoilers. By the end of the Season of the Undying, "the portals will close, the world state will change, and the Seasonal activity connected to it will go away." This is related to Bungie's promise that Destiny 2 going forward will prioritize an ever-changing, evolving world. "Yet something remains," Smith adds. "This will be just in time for [REDACTED] to kick off the start of Season Nine -- Season of Dawn."

This is the first time that Bungie has said the name of Destiny 2 Season 9 and speculation is already running rampant. Many expect the mysterious '[REDACTED]' to be the Traveler as Destiny 2 switches gears in preparation for the arrival of the Veil, a new race that comes from the dark areas of the universe. Season of Dawn could also refer to an unknown Fallen tribe, as there's a known tribe named the House of Dusk that was introduced in Destiny 2.

It's an exciting time for Destiny 2 fans. Bungie is making massive changes with the release of the Shadowkeep expansion. Some changes are highly anticipated, like the Armor 2.0 system, while others are being met with skepticism, like the new Seasonal Ranks battle pass system. But most exciting of all is Bungie's plans for an ever-changing experience. Shadowkeep will reveal just what Bungie has in store, but Season 9, the Season of Dawn, will be the first this new style's first culmination. The future of Destiny awaits, Undying before Dawn.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Shadowkeep launches October 1.
