Destiny 2's Season of Opulence event officially begins today, but some fans are already looking to the future of Bungie's popular FPS/RPG hybrid. While details on what exactly it will entail are unknown at this time, we at least know the name of Destiny 2 Season 8, which will eventually replace Season of Opulence.

The Destiny 2 Season 8 name is Season of the Undying. Again, we don't know exactly what it will entail, but more information on that front should come as we get closer to its start date. However, fans shouldn't have to wait quite as long to learn more about the future of Destiny 2 in a general sense.

That's because Bungie is revealing the next chapter for Destiny 2 in a special presentation on June 6. It's during this event that Bungie is expected to pull the curtain back on Destiny 2's Year 3 expansion, details of which have already leaked online thanks to dataminers sifting through the Season of Opulence update.

Dataminers have discovered that the next major Destiny 2 expansion is called Shadowkeep, and it will take place on the moon. According to the leak, the Destiny 2 Shadowkeep expansion will be available this fall, and while an exact release date isn't available, we can make an educated guess based on when past Destiny 2 expansions have launched.

Typically, Bungie has released new Destiny content in September. In fact, basically every major Destiny expansion since the first game has launched in early September, so it would be odd for Bungie to break from that pattern now. Bungie's split from Activision could potentially impact its release schedule and push back the Shadowkeep expansion from a September release, though that is just speculation at this time.

Luckily, fans won't have to speculate too much longer about the future of Destiny 2. Bungie's Destiny 2 "Next Chapter" livestream will take place on Thursday, June 6 at 10am PT. It's then when the future of the Destiny franchise, potentially even news about Season of the Undying, will be revealed.

Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
