Destiny 2 looks to be taking a new focus on its PvP, making it a more balanced and competitive experience than that of Destiny 1's Crucible offering. Many PvP fans were hoping that meant a Ranked playlist would be in order for the game, but Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2 will not feature any type of Ranked PvP at launch.

Game Director Luke Smith told PC Gamer in an interview that the fan-requested feature would not make the cut for "the September launch." It appears, however, that Ranked could be in the cards for the future of Destiny 2:

We always have ideas. I mean one of the things I’m working on right now is a roadmap for Destiny 2, you know with the live team, and this is going to be—you know, I anticipate things like ranking systems are going to be very desired, and we’re going to have those conversations. But I’m not going to commit us to any of that work on the phone.

Smith is very careful not to commit here, using similar language that fans have heard Bungie use to answer questions in the past such as if matchmaking would ever be implemented for raids or if Year 1 raids would ever make a return to current Light levels.

destiny 2 pvp match start

For the record, one of those never made it in the game (matchmaking) while all the raids did in fact make a return to the game just this past spring in Age of Triumph. So there's really no way to judge if Bungie will implement Ranked playlists in Destiny 2, although it's clear that the developer understands the demand for it from its playerbase.

It's a bit curious that Ranked games (something that was very popular in Halo 3 back when Bungie was developing it) would be left out, especially considering Destiny 2's PvP is already being segmented and focused down into a more casual Quickplay playlist and more hardcore Competitive playlist. That seemed to signal to fans that Destiny 2 was also headed the way of Ranked games, but apparently it's not on the cards for Bungie's sci-fi FPS at launch. At least, those competitive PvP players can hope that the feature will come eventually, and sooner rather than later.

Destiny 2 will launch on PS4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017 and on PC on October 24, 2017.
