Bungie reveals major difficulty changes will be made to raids, dungeons, and more high-level activities in the Lightfall expansion for Destiny 2. Game balance is shifting in Destiny 2 as Bungie promotes a greater challenge for returning Guardians while remaining accessible for potential newcomers this month.

Destiny 2 players will weave their newly-acquired Strand subclass powers in the new Lightfall expansion. Following the events of Season of the Seraph, the Vanguard sends Guardians to Neomuna, a hidden city on Neptune that contains secrets involving the Collapse and methods to combat the Witness. While on Neptune, players must battle the forces of Darkness that are under the direct command of the Witness' Cabal disciple, Emperor Calus. Lightfall also brings Destiny 2's second Legendary Campaign, which offers a bounty of rewards for players who conquer the challenging levels.

Bungie released a new blog post revealing a slew of difficulty changes and adjustments for high-level activities in Lightfall including raids, dungeons, and strikes. The first change involves the removal of Adept difficulty from all activities in Destiny 2 going forward. Hero, Legend, and Master difficulty options have been rebalanced and tuned to provide a challenging but fair experience. For example, Hero difficulty activities in Lightfall will be available at 1750 Power, which is the soft cap of Destiny 2's Season of Defiance. Legendary and Master difficulties will be available at 1800 Power, but players are encouraged to meet 1830 Power before attempting high-level activities at these difficulty settings.

Burns from Destiny 2's high-level activities will be classified into two categories: Surges and Threats. Surges increase a player's outgoing elemental damage by 25%, while Threats increase enemy elemental damage by 25%. The featured Surge for Season of Defiance is Strand, and weekly rotating Surges will be Solar and Void. Further, the Match Game modifier is being removed from Destiny 2 to make way for changes to overall difficulty and burn modifiers. Instead, mismatched elemental shields will take 50% less damage across all of Destiny 2 once the Lightfall expansion launches.

Although Destiny 2's content will be less forgiving soon, players may take advantage of powerful new weapons and bonuses to even the playing field. Additionally, Overcharged weapons will be available in Lightfall's high-level activities, giving players an 25% damage boost against the forces of Darkness. As a Guardian's Power level grows, the ability to clear high-level content becomes more feasible as well. This growth in Power may even out the overall decrease of Resilience in Destiny 2's Lightfall.

Bungie will likely adjust the game's difficulty options as players give their feedback during Destiny 2's Season of Defiance. For now, players still have some time to prepare their vaults and Guardians before the Lightfall expansion launches on February 28.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
