Destiny 2's The Witch Queen expansion brought a fantastic Raid to the game with Vow of the Disciple, which is not only compelling to run for its unique mechanics, but also forwards the story of the new campaign. Raids are often considered pinnacle content for Destiny 2 because they require communication and cooperation, as well as optimized loadouts in order to be completed the first few times. This is partly due to the fact that Raids are something players delve into completely blind at first, and especially so when a new one launches.

That magic can wane as players start running the newest Raid multiple times, and the same holds true for the thrill of hunting for all the activity's exclusive gear. As such, older Raids and Dungeons tend to be run only a handful of times until players have no real reason to go back, as the loot is not enticing anymore. Bungie recently announced that a weekly and seasonal Rotator system for both Dungeons and Raids is coming to Destiny 2 with Season 17, but the incentive might need an extra punch to truly motivate Guardians to go back to past glories.

How Bungie Could Improve Destiny 2's New Rotator System

The Rotator system that Bungie announced with the latest TWAB is split into two different categories: seasonal rotations and weekly rotations. Seasonal activities featured in the Rotator are meant to include the two newest releases in terms of Raids and Dungeons, one per category, each with its own Pinnacle rewards awarded on completion every week for the whole Season. This can change if Destiny 2 obtains new Raids or Dungeons the following Season, but it's likely not shifting to a different set of activities if not.

The weekly Rotator, on the other hand, includes a selection of one Raid and one Dungeon per week, which will reward players with the usual loot plus an added bonus in the form of one Pinnacle drop per week, per character, upon completion. The other incentive is that Destiny 2 players will now be able to repeatedly farm those specific activities for their loot with no lockout system. This is very appealing for those who are still missing a few pieces of gear from that specific Raid or Dungeon, but it doesn't really help those who aren't.

Additional Pinnacle rewards are always something worth pursuing in a game all about improving one's loadouts and gear level, but it might not warrant additional clears of older activities that don't have much new content. However, with The Witch Queen, Destiny 2 added Origin Traits and weapon crafting. Origin Traits are extra perks added to weapons that are based on their original foundry, their seasonal theme, or their Raid theme. For example, with Season of the Risen's guns the Origin Trait is Land Tank, whereas for weapons found in Vow of the Disciple it's Souldrinker.

Likewise, older Raids and Dungeons in the new Rotator system could become immediately more interesting to run if they came each with their own Origin Trait on weapons. Similarly, if those same weapons came each with a crafting pattern to unlock, Destiny 2 players could be motivated to run old content, even if they already own the current god roll for some guns. While a more plain Rotator system with only Pinnacle drops would be fun for a while, it wouldn't be as exciting as new things to look forward to. These two new features added with The Witch Queen could help Bungie make that happen.

Destiny 2 is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
