As promised last week, developer Bungie has detailed more about the challenge modes coming to the Leviathan raid in Destiny 2. The first challenge will go live before the end of the month, with a new challenge coming every week after that.

Starting on Tuesday, October 31, one encounter of Destiny 2's raid will be selected to have a challenge mode. Just as challenge modes have functioned in the past, this will require raid teams to approach and complete that encounter in a special way. The game will not explain to players how to complete each challenge mode, but there will be an on-screen prompt should the team fail the challenge. If nothing else, the failure notification helps players deduce what does and doesn't work.

As for the rewards players will receive, beating each challenge mode for the first time will award a special emblem. In addition, Bungie says that completing a challenge mode will give a guaranteed raid drop from that encounter. This could potentially be the way to get the most drops from the raid, considering that most encounters only award tokens, which are then taken to Benedict 99-40. In other words, those players who are looking for those elusive raid armor pieces or weapons may find completing challenges is their best bet.

Bungie did not specify whether the challenge modes can be completed on both Normal and Prestige modes, but it stands to reason they will. In Destiny 1, completing challenge modes on its harder mode would award extra loot at higher power (light) levels but there's no mention of that here.

Considering that Destiny 2 is not giving loot at a higher power level from the Prestige raid, it seems likely that challenge modes will be able to be completed on the Normal difficulty. But Prestige challenges may offer guaranteed versions of its loot, which includes armor with a golden color scheme and a slight purple glow. It's a lot like the Trials of the Nine Flawless gear in that it looks mostly the same, but has some sections that glow.

Destiny 2 is available now for PS4 and Xbox One, and releases on October 24, 2017 for PC.
