Destiny 2 will launch its Shadowkeep expansion this fall, and with that comes an expectation from players that the new content will add more story to the game. At Gamescom, developer Bungie discussed the narrative direction of the Shadowkeep expansion, responding to a question about the pyramid ships that have appeared as a looming and unknown threat throughout the Destiny franchise.

While Bungie did not go into great detail, as to not spoil anything coming in the Destiny 2 expansion, nor did it directly address if the pyramid ships would appear in Shadowkeep, Principle Producer Scott Taylor did say that Shadowkeep will push the game's narrative forward:

Shadowkeep absolutely pushes the main narrative threads of Destiny forward. While we've loved doing what we think of [as] side-stories that explore corners of the Destiny universe in past expansions, Shadowkeep moves the Destiny story forward. Something else that we're excited about is how Shadowkeep's storyline kicks off the storylines explored during the Season of the Undying and all of the other seasons in Year Three. No story spoilers from me!

The narrative momentum of Destiny 2 has commonly been a complaint among fans who feel like both Destiny and Destiny 2 began narrative threads that have never been answered or paid off. Whatever happened to the Exo Stranger? Instead of moving the narrative forward with new content, past expansions and Annual Pass add-ons have often just added additional threads to follow.

Bungie has recently acknowledged this and is promising that Shadowkeep will pick up some of the main narrative threads of Destiny 2. When Shadowkeep was revealed, Destiny franchise director said on the reveal live stream that the approach to much of Destiny’s additional content in the past could be considered “monster of the week” stories — serial entries within a big universe rather than something with a persistent plot that continues to move forward.

destiny 2 post credits scene pyramid ships

The pyramid ships are one of the biggest mysteries of the Destiny franchise. Originally teased during the development of Destiny 1, the pyramid ships appear to belong to an entirely different enemy race or perhaps the Darkness itself. Despite being shown during development, the pyramid ships and this enemy race never appeared in-game. In Destiny 2, the pyramid ships once again appear in the post-credits scene after the Traveler awakes and sends an energy burst out into the universe.

But again, even though the pyramid ships appeared at the end of Destiny 2’s original campaign, there has been no sight nor hint of them for the past two years. Some think that the floating bodies seen in some of the Shadowkeep trailers could be connected to the pyramid ships, but when the pyramid ships will finally play their part in Destiny still remains a mystery. The next time they could appear is in Shadowkeep, and fans only have a little over a month to wait to find out if they do.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep releases October 1, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
