GameStop: Early Destiny 2 Pre-Order Numbers are 'Amazing'

While official gameplay footage for Destiny 2 won't debut until next month, it appears that isn't stopping fans from rushing to get their pre-orders in for the sequel to Bungie's sci-fi shooter. That's according to early sales and figures from the retail video game selling and trading chain, GameStop.

While GameStop has not revealed exact numbers, Eric Bright, GameStop's Senior Director of Merchandising, tells Game Rant that things are going very well when it comes to Destiny 2 pre-orders:

"The early results that we are seeing from Destiny 2 pre-orders are amazing. Consumers are really appreciating the uniqueness of our assortment. Our 'Only@ GameStop' exclusive collectibles, such as our Gjallarhorn Replica and the Destiny Warlock 7-inch Figure by McFarlane Toys, have been huge hits. Our exclusive game bundles also are providing fans of the franchise with a solution for one-stop shopping."

That appears to be true as the Destiny 2 Collector's Edition pre-orders are running out quickly and becoming increasingly hard to find. Just as Bright mentioned, in addition to the GameStop-exclusive $100 Limited Edition version of Destiny 2 and the Cayde-6 figure pre-order bonus, the company also has a number of other Destiny goodies for hardcore fans to get their hands on.

From shirts to the impressive life-sized Gjallarhorn replica, there is no shortage of Destiny swag out on the market. And with a game that has set records in the past, both in sales and buzz around the game, there is no doubt a large number of fans who have a desire to pick up more Destiny swag.

The response in sales must no doubt be good news for GameStop, who recently announced that sales in the last quarter of 2016 were especially weak, resulting in the closure of 150 stores around the world. Things haven't been positive of late for GameStop, with its stock dropping after the announcement of the Xbox Game Pass and after the company came under fire for its "Circle of Life" Program.

GameStop very much functions on driving sales away from the increasing digital platforms of PlayStation Network and Xbox Live by having exclusive product to sell gamers like the ones mentioned above, and it appears that is working well at least in the case of Destiny 2 merchandise.

Destiny 2 was officially announced last week with pre-orders becoming available the same day as the reveal trailer. Bungie will reveal a first look at gameplay from the hotly anticipated sequel on May 18.

Destiny 2 is in production, set to launch on September 8 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
