This past Tuesday, Bungie officially launched the first Iron Banner event for Destiny 2 since the arrival of the Witch Queen expansion. Players have the opportunity to earn a variety of Iron Banner rewards, including a Legendary Hand Cannon and Sword, as well as progress in the Season of the Risen Legendary Quest. What would appear to be a normal Iron Banner event isn't, however. Bungie's warning Destiny 2 players to spend their Iron Banner tokens before the end of the season. Before anyone takes Bungie's message as a threat, it's really more of a warning. Bungie senior community manager Dylan Gafner, better known as dmg04, dropped the cryptic message on Twitter Friday afternoon. Gafner tells Destiny 2 players that he recommends they turn in their Iron Banner tokens as they earn them. If not, they should make sure to spend them all before the end of Season of the Risen. And by all tokens, Gafner means spend all of them, otherwise they'll be lost.RELATED: Destiny 2 Details New Iron Banner Weapons for Witch Queen

As for why players need to spend their Iron Banner tokens, Gafner isn't ready to say. What he's willing to communicate is that more information will be made available during one of Bungie's future This Week at Bungie community updates. Regardless, Destiny 2 players should spend their tokens, even if they don't understand why they need to yet.

The cryptic nature of Gafner's message is understandable causing a lot of confusion. Most Destiny 2 players are already spending their Iron Banner tokens as necessary to earn rewards, but receiving an odd message via a Bungie community manager's Twitter makes the situation feel more sudden and awkward than it probably needs to be.

While it hasn't been explicitly stated, Bungie is preparing an Iron Banner revamp for next season. The event has long been criticized as excessively grindy and with no clear path towards specific/consistent rewards. That's a criticism that Bungie has even acknowledged, publicly stating that a rework was in development.

That rework then leaked, with Lord Saladin said to become more like Saint-14, Iron Banner tokens being removed, new Iron Banner weapons and armor released each season, and armor slots just for Iron Banner mods. Needless to say, news should be coming soon. In the meantime, spend those Iron Banner tokens.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
