The most recent expansion for Destiny 2 has shaken up many of the existing mechanics in the game while also introducing some entirely new ones, though a lot of fans are unhappy with the new Guardian Ranks and commendation systems in particular. These new mechanics serve to aid with the progression for new and old Destiny 2 players alike, though the necessary requirements for reaching higher ranks have resulted in the vast majority of players all being at the same rank as each other.

The commendation system itself allows players to show their appreciation for the teammates that they play with at the end of most activities in the game. The system is functionally similar to commendation systems in other games, such as the endorsement mechanic in Overwatch 2, as received commendations offer no benefit other than raising a player's commendation score. It's a simple and welcome mechanic that encourages greater positivity between players, though fans of Destiny 2 have taken issue with how this new system has been tied in with the Guardian Ranks mechanic.

Most fans of Destiny 2 have likely realized by now that what seems to be the majority of players in the game are at the same rank: rank 6. While most of the requirements for moving up to the rank above are relatively straightforward and easy to achieve provided that players own the Destiny 2: Lightfall DLC, one requirement that fans are finding particularly outrageous is the commendation score that needs to be obtained. A player on Reddit known as Chundercracker expressed their thoughts about this via a post on the site, arguing that the necessity of obtaining so many commendations pushes players to commend others simply with the hopes that they'll return the gesture, thus defeating the original purpose of the commendation system.

Currently, players need a total commendation score of 750 if they hope to reach rank 7 - a score that will require a huge number of individual commendations. Specifying exactly how many commendations are needed is difficult considering the number of commendation points earned varies depending on the activity. With that in mind, players have worked out that achieving this commendation score can be met rather quickly for players that frequently raid in Destiny 2, as the endgame raid activities offer the most lucrative gains when it comes to commendation scores.

This can be difficult for players who don't have the means to frequently play through raids however, and players with less time on their hands will find it all the more difficult to move up to further ranks, the highest of which demands a grand commendation score of 6,000. While part of this new system's purpose seems to be to more clearly identify hardcore players compared to more casual fans for better or worse, many fans hope that Bungie will respond to community feedback by adjusting this particular requirement in the future.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
