Introduced with the release of Destiny 2's Forsaken expansion, Gambit has proven to be a popular and often controversial option for PvPvE action. Even now, with Gambit's relevancy to current content shrinking season by season, Destiny 2 players continue to have heated discussions about the mode's mechanics and balance. In fact, a recent thread on heavily upvoted Reddit thread did exactly that, offering up an idea for how Bungie could improve Destiny 2's Gambit mode as it currently stands.

The Reddit post was originally shared by user Icybjerg and he gives away his idea for Gambit in the title. It's "BUNGIE! If The enemy team summon a primeval and we are still getting motes THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO INVADE!" Suffice to say, they're using tried and true Reddit strategies of yelling, exclamation points, and caps lock with great success. Nevertheless, the post has over 4,600 upvotes in the Destiny 2 subreddit, with many players offering a similar sentiment regarding Gambit needing improvements.

Icybjerg's argument is that a team that has summoned a primeval already has a significant advantage over its opposition. As such, allowing that team to continue invading as they struggle to summon their own primeval isn't a fun or competitive mechanic. Icybjerg would prefer if invasions were locked for the primeval team, so that the team that's behind could have a chance to make a comeback. Additionally, they note that some teams are able to "stack" invades and then use them all during the Gambit primeval phase, making a comeback impossible.

The most highly upvoted comments in the Reddit thread don't necessarily agree directly with Icybjerg's idea, but do unite around frustration with the current state of Gambit. The top comment states that primevals die so fast anymore that the change wouldn't matter. The next-highest comment mentions several issues, including the strength of the Eyes of Tomorrow rocket launcher, invasion frequency, and primevals dying too fast. The third highest comment agrees, but goes further, saying invasions need more inherent risk in general.

While there's clearly no one best way to fix Gambit shared in the Reddit thread, most everyone agrees that something needs to be changed. But at the same time, the thread is also full of Destiny 2 players who appear to remain fans of Gambit. As such, there's also a degree of truth to the idea that it's fine as it stands.

Ultimately, the root of the problem is that Gambit is old content in Destiny 2. Bungie has lots of other plans for Destiny 2 going forward and revisiting Gambit likely isn't part of them. That said, it's impressive that Gambit remains as successful and popular as it is despite being content that's aging. Community feedback is a good step towards persuading Bungie to reconsider, though.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
