Destiny 2 may be currently trying to climb itself out of trouble with fans with a full schedule of game updates to address some of the biggest complaints about the game. However, the game's current state didn't affect its launch last fall, especially on PC, which Activision says is their biggest PC game launch in the publisher's history.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said during an earnings call that Destiny 2 was Activision's best-selling PC game ever "based on units." In addition, the game's first expansion, Curse of Osiris, was played by more players than Destiny 1's first expansion, The Dark Below.

That's good news for Activision and Bungie, but it's not too surprising considering the PC version offers the best visual experience and arguably the best way to play shooters. Sidestepping the mouse and keyboard vs. controller debate, Destiny 2 on PC sports 4K visuals and can run at 60 frames per second (and beyond with an uncapped frame rate option).

As a result demand was high for the PC version of the game, with many hardcore fans buying the game on both console and PC. Some simply didn't want to wait the 7 weeks until the PC version released, so they decided to get their first taste on console and then switch to PC for the long haul. It would be interesting to see how many Destiny fans bought the game on at least two platforms, but there is no way of tracking that, unfortunately.

While hype and early reviews were positive at launch, the sentiment has turned sour in the months since, with many players leaving the game and leaving a record-low population in some of the game's modes. But Bungie has opened its lines of communication with fans and is working towards improving the game to give players a reason to keep coming back and engaging with it.

If Bungie can get the changes right and get enough players back in the game, the future could be bright for Destiny 2 and its future expansions. At the very least there is an install base to tap into with new content; it's just a matter of whether those players will be interested.

Destiny 2 and its Curse of Osiris expansion are available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
