Earlier this week, Destiny 2 PC players complained that they had been unfairly banned from the game. As some fans feared that they had been banned accidentally by Bungie (which is what happened to some at launch), the developer has now commented on the matter.
On the game's official forums, one disgruntled Destiny 2 player wrote that they had been banned from the game for "no reason" and that they did "nothing on purpose to get an unfair advantage in the game." However, the player did admit that they had a cheat engine installed on their PC to allow them to "tinker" with other games.
Responding to the thread, Bungie Community Manager Cozmo explained why the player had been banned, making it clear that the ban was no accident. Cozmo wrote, "We do not ban players for simply having cheat tools installed, but do ban for running them while playing Destiny 2." Moreover, Bungie does not "differentiate between cheat tools for Destiny 2 and cheat tools for other games because it would be easy to avoid a ban by making a Destiny 2 cheat tool that pretends to be a cheat tool for another game."
In a follow-up comment on Reddit, Cozmo further explained that players will be banned for "repeatedly" running cheat engines in the background. As such, players should make sure to "turn all cheat tools off before running Destiny 2" so that they "won't have to worry about being banned for that." The Bungie representative also stressed again that Destiny 2 PC players are not being banned for running third-party applications such as OBS, Discord, and XSplit.
Bungie has already had to set the record straight on the bans once, as the developer explained that players are banned after manual investigation rather than with an automated system. The developer may feel frustrated that it constantly has to explain its ban process, but fans will appreciate the transparency. The latest reports of possible 'accidental' bans also led some fans to fear that they could be hit with a ban next and players will also be glad to hear that this is not the case.
Cozmo's comments could also discourage Destiny 2 PC players from even thinking about cheating. Bungie has clearly thought a lot about how players could misuse its game - including creating 'spoof' cheat tools. This should hopefully mean that those who do actually cheat will be unable to get by the developer, and Destiny 2 PC will remain fair for all.
