One of the way Bungie provides Destiny 2 players with a challenge in endgame content are the various champions populating activities like grandmaster nightfalls and the raids. These enemies hit harder than average enemies and generally require more specific weapons to take them down, depending on the seasonal weapon mods. However, one champion type is proving to be an annoyance for many players who are now asking Bungie to nerf it.

Destiny 2's champion enemies fall into one of three types - overload, barrier, and unstoppable. As the name implies, barrier champions are capable of generating a protective shield which prevents players from doing damage while the champion regenerates its health. Unstoppable champions will charge forward at players and are more resilient, requiring much more damage to defeat than normal enemies. Overload champions teleport around players and quickly regenerate health after being damaged.

It's the third aforementioned champion players are calling on Bungie to nerf. Reddit user UselessDeadMemes posted a thread letting their thoughts be known about overload champions and how difficult they can be to defeat compared to the other two champion types. Useless points to the teleport spamming and rapid health regeneration as unneededly difficult, especially when trying to complete endgame activites.

Useless goes into greater detail, citing issues they and other players in the thread have with specific overload champions. One example is the seeker shots overload hobgoblins will continue to generate and fire, even if they are frozen or stunned. Overload chieftans weren't spared, either, saying their health can regenerate even when they have been stunned by players.

Champions have been a point of ongoing contention within the Destiny 2 community since they were introduced in the 2019 expansion, Shadowkeep. The enemy type was introduced to add some additional difficulty to endgame content which, by that time, were becoming somewhat stale due to weapon power creep. Champions could only be defeated using perks from the seasonal artificat which, in turn, forced players to use specific weapon types and think more about their weapon loadouts going into the endgame.

However, players have not been shy about voicing their frustrations when a new season kicks off thanks to the possible combination of buffs or nerfs to champions and the new champion weapon mods. This was the case when Season of the Lost kicked off in August 2021 which saw bows and swords with overload mods, unstoppable mods for sidearms, fusion rifles, and pulse rifles, and finally barrier auto rifles. Some players complained about the combination, saying weapon builds would be awkward especially due to the unstoppable fusion and overload sword not being usable together thanks to requiring six mod points each.

Destiny 2 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
